The Lovell’s Flat Institute met in the hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Robinson, sen., occupying the chair. The roll call was “ Uses of kerosene.” The competition, “A. bar of home-made soap.” was won by Mrs Kerr, with Mrs Carruthers and Mies N. MacDonald second and third respectively. As the demonstrator for the day was unable to be pres ent, Miss Slater gave a further description of her brother's travels in foreign lands. * Miss Clarke, the hostess, was assisted by Mrs Bowie and Mrs Kerr,
The Brighton Institute met in Hislop Hall on June 27. Mrs G. Milsom presided. The motto was “ Without economy none can be rich; with economy few- 1 need be poor.” The roll-call was “Your views on institute bays at the show.’’ Mr White, of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, gave a practical demonstration on the uses of attachments for Singer Machines. The hostesses were Mesdames Caldwell, Coutts, and Dyasm, and Miss Fegane.
The Sawyers’ Bay Institute met on Wednesday afternoon. The roll call was “ Something I would like to know.” The writing competition was won by Mrs Fraser, with Mrs Latta-second, Mrs Miller and Mrs Munro tying for third place. The demonstration was “A wool crocheted cushion,” by Mrs Pettigrew. Mrs Begbie gave a reading on “ Drama Circles in England." Mrs Brighton read a paper on “ What I saw at the stalls of the Women’s Institutes at the Winter. Show.” The baking competition results are as follows: —Oven scones—Mrs Clark 1, Mrs Pettigrew 2; girdle scones —Mrs Latta 1, Mrs Hewitson 2; pikelets—Mrs Fraser 1, Mrs Latta 2. A debate, “ Should Women be Returned to Parliament? ” was won by the “ Noes.”
The Popotunoa Institute met on Saturday. The motto was “ A cheery smile and a how do you do may change the day from grey to blue." The roll call was “ Exchange of a pudding recipe.” The competition, “ Something new from something • old,” resulted in Mrs M’Kenzie being first, Miss H. Watkins second, and Mrs Chapman-Cohen third. Mrs A. Smith gave a demonstration on “ Re-hcel-ing a sock.” Mrs Nelson and Mrs Brown were hostesses. The social half hour was taken up with a debate on “ Town versus Country,” the country winning. The judge was Mrs Watkins. Mrs Smith was appointed a delegate to Auckland.
