MOSGIEL BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The Mosgiel Borough Council' met last evening. The Mayor (Mr A. F. Quelch) occupied the chair, and there were also present Crs J. F. Frew, W. P. Hartstonge, R. Smeaton, G. Smith, A. Steven, and E. J. Wilson. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that it had considered a proposal put forward by an insurance coinpany for a superannuation scheme for the employees of the council, but, after consideration, it had been decided not to proceed further with the matter at present. . The report was adopted. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee reported as follows: , The committee has again considered the question of replacing the macrocarpa trees behind the stable in the recreation ground with a holly hedge, but it was decided to leave this matter over for another year. The chairman submitted a report on an inspection of the Whare Flat reserve, and recommended that consideration should be given to the question of tree; planting. The matter is engaging the further consideration of the committee. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported as folThe septic tanks were cleaned out during flood in stream. The valve controlling the chamber at the top intake was closed prior to the flood in the stream in order to prevent silt from entering the pipe line. Leishman’s intake became blocked during the heavy rain, but was cleared-the next day, and all air and scour valves have been, attended to. Several fire plug indicators have been erected. A defective water service. North Taieri, was repaired. A newer connection was laid to a property in Forfar street and the drain inspected and tested. All storm . water sumps have been attended to. During the recent flood several streams in the borough overflowed • in low-lying parts, but no damage w r as dbne to roadways. _ Footpaths on Dey, Dryden, Morrison. High, Church, Lang, Cargill, Ayr, Argyle, Mure, and Gordon road were grubbed and .cleaned; 603 yards of gravel have been spread on footpaths under contract. Gladstone, Quarry, and Gordon roads were surfaced. Factory and Gladstone roads were graded. Culvert across Forth street was cleaned out of willow root growth between pipe joints. All pipe crossings and waterways received close attention during wet weather. Men under No. 5 scheme were employed on protective work on the Silverstream bank. - The committee is obtaining a report as to the most suitable type of trees to plant round the septic tanks site. The maintenance of footpaths has received the consideration of the committee, and it was decided that the work should be continued until all footpaths in the borough have received attention. A resolution has been passed by the committee rescinding a previous resolution under which property owners desiring the formation of new footpaths were required to bear half the cost. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Commissioner of Transport forwarded a copy of a Gazette notice containing the approval of the Minister of Transport to the classification of streets in the borough.—Received. The Director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department wrote in reply to the council’s request for extended Sunday hours at the telephone exchange, stating that if three-quarters, of the subscribers made a request and agreed to an additional charge of 3s. 6d per annum, the extended attendance at the exchange would be arranged. In respect to the council’s complaint regarding the difference in toll charges between Dunedin and Outram and Dunedin and Mosgiel, the letter stated that any charge less than at present in force would not reimburse the department for providing the service.—Received. Mrs J. Kirkland, on behalf of the Women’s Institutes of the district, wrote asking the council to consider the possibility of improving the stage in the Coronation Hall. The institutes proposed producing a drama festival next year, and improved facilities would make this much more easily carried out. —The matter was referred to the General Committee. GENERAL. The Mayor made reference to the illness of Mr J. P. Walls, who, he said, had reported tits council’s meetings for a number of years, and it was agreed to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Walls.
