Britain’s 60,000 postmen are to have smarter summer uniforms. For years they have chafed against the discomfort of their heavy clothes. Their own suggestion that they should wear opennecked shirts was frowned on by the authorities. In future they will receive two uniforms annually. One is for winter wear. The other is of lighter weight. Its design will be the same, but superior quality material will give a much smarter appearance. The news was welcomed in the woollen mills of Yorkshire. Normally uniforms cost the Post Office £240,000 a year, and the now order will mean an additional £200,000.
