Konald Walker, a 24-year-old Yorkshireman, was acclaimed the strongest man in Britain. Four years ago Walker was a carter near Wakefield, Yorkshire. One day his horse collapsed. He dragged it half a mile to the nearest village. Recently he met 11 weight-lifters in an international contest between Britain and America. The contestants included a commercial traveller, a Welsh miner, and a 19-year-old Yorkshire farmer. “ This is the first contest to find Britain’s strongest man that has been held for 20 years,” said Mr W. J. Lowry, secretary of the British Amateur W’eight Lifters’ Association. “There,'are 20,000 weight-lifters in this country, some of them women. Ronald Walker does not have to train on any special diet. He eats and drinks the same sort of stuff as you and ms — only about twice as much.” At the end of a gruelling five-hour trial Ronald Walker gained the title. In the five hours he lifted a total of 15251 b, and twice broke his own British record for the right-hand push.
