UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

NATIONAL WORKERS’ MOVEMENT. The executive of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement held its weekly meeting last night, Mr M. Silverstone (president) occupying the chair. The National Executive’s letter regarding the sustenance proposal referred from the general meeting was fully discussed, and the following remit was carried: “ That we adhere to the policy of the National Executive, and support the demand for the 10a increase for all unemployed and sustenance men.” The report of the dances held by the Social Committee was received. It was agreed that a meeting of delegates be arranged for July 16, The secretary reported that he had visited a few groups during the week-end, and all the men had joined up with the movement and had appointed delegates. TRADES HALL DANCE. The unemployed dance in the Trades Hall on Friday evening was well patronised by old and young. The second round of the Destiny Competition was held, and the judge (Mr Hyman Isaacs) selected the following couples for the final:—Mr King and Mrs Lethaby, Mr Olsen and Miss Rowdier, and Mr and Mrs Stewart. Music was provided by the Harmony Boys’ Orchestra. The winners of the statue waltz and the Monte Carlo were Miss Gardiner and Mr Olsen and Mrs Lethaby and Mr King. The lucky number was held by Mr J. M'Murray. INTERESTING LECTURE. The Trades Hall was well filled on Sunday evening, when Mr J. Saunders delivered a very interesting address, his subject being, “My_ Impressions of Germany as I Saw It in March, 1935. An interesting discussion, in which various aspects of the address came under review, was taken part in by many members of the audience. The chairman (Mr L. Cecil) proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, which was carried.
