CHARGE OF BIGAMY

LABOURER BEFORE tHE COURT BOTH “WIVES” GIVE EVIDENCE (Per United Press Association) NAPIER, July 1. A charge of bigamy was heard against Robert Edward Parkes, a labourer, in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning. The case for the police was that having married Bridget Elizabeth Seannell at Stratford in 1912, he went through the form of marriage with Caro-' line Ruth Crump at Waverley in 1927. The case was uncompleted owing to it being necessary for the police to verify the date of the alleged meeting between the accused and his legal wife. Both the women concerned gave evidence of the accusc'l leaving them. In 1919 his legal wife obtained a maintenance order against him and also in 1934, and the other woman obtained a similar order in 1932, The police gave evidence that the accused had made a statement in which he admitted the offence.
