Canada 1935 I Published by the Bureau of Statistics, I Canada 1935 is the official handbook of present conditions and recent progress, j The reports summarise figures dealing; with the subjects of population, produc- i tion, external and internal trade, trans-! portation, finance, education, social institutions, etc. The information is attractively set out in reasonable compass, and the handbook presents a well-rounded pic- j ture of the current Canadian situation from the Atlantic to the Pacific, together with interesting historical information. The King's Book An artistic souvenir of the King's jubilee is published by Messrs Raphael Tuck under the title " The King's Book." It is a book of the family of the British Empire, and in its 35 pages it contains 12 articles by various authors on the colonies, each of which is accompanied by a symbolic colour design by an English artist. The Poet Laureate (Mr John Masefield) contributes a sonnet and an epilogue is written by Mr John Drinkwater. The official jubilee portraits of their Majesties are also included, and the frontispiece is an illuminated reproduction of portion of the Empire broadcast address by the King on December 25, 1934. The writers who contribute the descriptions of the scenic, historic and industrial features of the colonies include Sir Philip Gibbs, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, " lan Hay," and Mr Arthur Bryant. The souvenir is published in the follow intr forms: —Board covers. 3s 6d; cloth bound. Bs; quarter-bound leather, 10s 6d; special art edition (full leather bound), £1 Is; edition de luxe (full leather bound, limited to 500 copies), £5 ss. (The prices quoted are the English net. prices.) The profits from the sales will be devoted to some philanthropic work in the United Kingdom and overseas • approved by his Majesty. Copies are obtainable from Messrs Raphael Tuck, Moorfields, London E.C. 2. Mercury . .... The June number of the New Zealand Mercury, published from 35 Nairn street, Wellington, price Is, contains a varied selection of recent Dominion verse and. a little prose. The prize poem for the month is a finely-wrought piece, "Gust of Wind," by Arnold Cork. Other outstanding contributions include "The Ijnperishable Image," by Douglas Stewart, who combines modern technique with almost classic beauty, and poems by C. R. Allen and W. W. Bridgman, whose writings are always pregnant of thought. The standard attained throughout is a high one. There are several song lyrics, but these scarcely reach the necessary combination of compactness and significance. A short story, " Tides," is good in conception, but the dialogue in the second part is too highly pitched. Blackwell'a Catalogues Recent publications by Messrs B. H. Blackwell, Oxford, include Nos. 367 and 369 of their catalogues of second-hand and rare books. No. 367 is a list of second-hand books dealing chiefly with mathematical and scientific subjects. No. 369 is a catalogue of English literature of the late Restoration and the earlier Augustan periods, including the works of Dryden, Pope, Swift and their contemporaries. Early quarto plays, standard and library sets and translations are included in the list.
