ROBBERY UNDER ARMS A BUTCHER SENTENCED MELBOURNE, June 27. David Brown (20), a butcher, was to-day sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for robbery under arms of two bank officials in broad daylight in a busy Melbourne street on April 5, when £1725 was stolen. Mr Justice Martin described the crime as " particularly audacious and successful." He said to Brown: "You cannot play a desperate game with impunity." Brown's two companions in the holdup are still at large. STRIKE OF CANE CUTTERS BRISBANE, June 27. A strike of cane cutters in the Ayr district resulted in 5(50 cutters, (500 mill workers, and numerous field hands being thrown out of employment. Trade in the towns of Home Hill and Ayr is practically at a standstill. TWO AEROPLANES COLLIDE SYDNEY, June 27. (Received June 27, at 10.15 p.m.) Two aeroplanes piloted by aviation pupils collided at a height of 500 feet over Mascot to-day, but both landed safely. One machine was badly damaged, but the pilots and instructors were not injured. THE STUD SHEEP SALES SYDNEY, June 27. (Received June 28, at 0.5 a.m.) The stud sheep sales closed to-day. Merinos sold during the four days totalled 2050, making £49,542, or an average of £24, compared with an average of £25 last year. British breeds and Corriedales disposed of numbered 382, which realised £4OOO. QUEENSLAND SUGAR INDUSTRY MELBOURNE, June 27. (Received June 27, at 0.15 a.m.) The Federal Government is taking steps to strengthen the economic position of the Queensland sugar industry by reducing production. The chief sugar producing interests are co-operat-ing. Lower production will be reflected in the next crop by approximately 70,000 tons. It is stated that the export price of sugar is well below the cost of production, while the proportion of the crop that must be exported unprofitably has been increasing.
