Karetu sailed this morning for Tlmaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington to discharge the remainder of her cargo from Newcastle and Sydney. Wingatul Is due at Dunedin to-day from Auckland, via ports. She Is to sail to-morrow for Oamaru, Tlmaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland Rata is due here to-day from Westport, via Lyttelton, to discharge coal and load general cargo. She Is to sail to-night for Westport and Greymouth. Walmarino is to leave Auckland to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. She Is due at this port on July 3. Waipahl !s now due at Dunedin on July 3 from Auckland and Wellington. She will load general cargo and sail the same day for' Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth, via ports. Orepukl is due at Dunedin to-morrow from Wellington. She is to sail to-morrow evening for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Wanganul. Holmdale Balled last evening for Oamaru, Tlmaru and Lyttelton to complete loading for Wellington, Plcton and Wanganui. BEATUS FROM NEW ORLEANS. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. advise that the steamer Beatus is due at Dunedin on Sunday from New Orleans, via northern ports. The vessel has asphalt, oil, and general cargo for discharge. SURREY LEAVES LIVERPOOL. Cabled advice has been received that the Federal steamer Surrey left Liverpool on June 22 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on July 31. TROJAN STAR LEAVES GLASGOW. Cable advice has been received that the Blue Star Line steamer Trojan Star left Glasgow on June 22 in ballast for Bluff, where she Is due on July 30 to commence Homeward loading. DURHAM FOR ENGLAND. The Federal Line's motor ship Durham was expected to leave Auckland yesterday for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow. PORT FAIRY AT LONDON. Tho Port Fairy, which left Wellington on May 18 for London, via Capo Horn and Dakar, reached London on June 22. AUXILIARY SCHOONER ISABEL. The three-masted auxiliary schooner Isabel, 54 tons gross, arrived at Auckland last Saturday morning from Suva, having experienced prolonged stormy weather during her 12 days' passage. She is one of the oldest sea-going vessels to have visited Auckland, having been built at Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1867. She has been purchased by Auckland buyers and, after overhaul and refitting, will be used In the coastal trade. MONOWAI'S TRANSHIPMENTS. The Union Company's liner Monowal, which arrived at Wellington on Monday afternoon from Sydnoy, brought transhipments ex Narkunda, Chltral, Kltano Maru, Otranto, Nieuw Holland, Dimboola, Momba, Coolara, Orungal, Kowarra, Katoomba, Hobson's Bay, Westralla Ville de Strasbourg, Anglo-Columbian, Mlldura, Neptuna, Havel, Barrabool, Tanda, Koranul, BaradlTie and Stassfurt. PERSONAL. Captain B. B. Irwin has resumed command of the Maori after holidays, relieving Captain G. B.- Morgan. Mr R. V. Waldron has returned from holidays and Is standing by at the head office of the Union Company. Mr A. S. Buchanan has joined the Raugatira as assistant purser after holidays. Mr J. Broad has returned from holidays and joined the Monowai as junior purser. ENGINE TROUBLE ON KAIMAI. Engine trouble developing 25 miles from port, the Union Company's coastal steamer Kaimai had to finish her trip from Timaru to Lyttelton on Tuesday in tow of a tug. A fault developed In the piston of the intermediate cylinder of her triple-expansion engines, with the result that her speed was reduced to less than five knots. The Kalmai's master reported the mishap by wireless and the tug Lyttelton met the vessel at, the heads shortly after 10 a.m.. The Kahnai entered the moles just before 1 p.m., when sho should have arrived early in the morning. The damaged piston was sent to Wellington on Tuesday evening to be repaired. , NEW MOTOR SHIPS. Messrs Cammell Laird and Co., Ltd., Birkenhead, recently delivered the two twin-screw motor ships Reculver and Strathearn to the Corporation of Trinity House, these being the third and fourth Trinity House vessels In succession to be built at Birkenhead. The vessels have a distinctive appearance with their tripod masts, cable lifter forward, deck crane, and other interesting features. They are 173 feet In length h.p., by 33 feet in breadth moulded, by 15 feet In depth moulded, the draft being 12 feet and have a speed of 12 knots. Seahandiness rather than speed being an allImportant feature of these vessels, which are used as tenders for the corporation's lighthouse and lightship service, as well as for dispersing wrecks, model tests were conducted in the "National Tank at Teddington with a view of obtaining the best hull form from the standpoint of producing good sea boats; at the same time tests were made with various propellers with the net result that really efficiently propelled and particularly sen-kindly vessels have been produced. An Oertz streamlined rudder Is used In each case, and the steering gear is of Rrown Bros, electrohydraulic type with telemotor control. A hand hydraulic gear is also provided for emergencies The deck machinery is all steam-driven. Pumps for supplying oil and water to lightships when It Is not possible for the tender to go alongside aro located in a separate pump room Propulsion is by means of two four-cylinder two-stroke diroctly-revorsiblo Polar Diesel engines having an aggregate service output of 860 b.h.p. Each engine drives its own cooling water and forced lubrication pump In addition to a bilge and sanitary pump. The engine room also houses a 25 k.w. Allen steam-driven generating set and there Is also a 10 k.w. Petterenglncd Diesel-generator. A small Petter engine Is also used to drive a Reavell emergency compressor and, If necessary, a Drysdale general sorvice pump. An interesting feature of the machinery Installation Is the provision of a streamline lubricating oil renovator, a device of particularly hlßh filtration efficiency.
