The Clydevale Women's Institute met in the hall on Thursday afternoon of last week, Mrs Probert Dunlop presiding. The roll call was " Bring an antique and give its history." The competition was A veranda cushion," the following being successful:—Mies B. May 1, Mrs A. I. Miller 2. Mrs W. Dunlop 3 Dominion Conference business was fully discussed. The hostesses were: Mesdames Hys'op, Goodman, and N. Young. :jt # * The Moeraki Women's Institute met on Friday afternoon. Mrs M'Lellan (vicepresident) being in the chair. Ihe motto was "Help us leave the world a little better by the work we. do. J*e competition—"A plate of six different biscuits "-was won by Mrs J. Aitchwon, with Mrs Booth second. Ihe hostesses were Mesdames J. Aitclnson and A. Booth. 4c * * The Waitahuna Institute met on Friday last. The motto was " Life without friendship is like a sky without sun. The roll call was " for the party " The demonstration was stencilling" by Mrs W. Brown. The competition was for " Four varieties of sweets The voting resulted as follows:—Senior -Mrs Labes 1, Mrs Woodley 2; juniorMiss E. Henry 1, Miss M. Woodley 2. Hostesses were Mesdames yuiiter ana Pennell and Miss M. M'Kenzie. # * * Miss J. Gawn presided at the monthly meeting of the Romahapa Women s Institute. Miss M. Wright second. Misses Jean Gawn and V. Johnston were hostesses.

On Friday evening the Hillend Hall was filled on the occasion of the celebration of the' fourth birthday of the Pukekoma Institute. Visitors were present from Kaitangata, Stirling, Balclutha, Awamangu, and Lovell's Flat Institutes, also the Epend branch of the Women's Division. The president (Mrs G. L. Cunningham) welcomed the visitors. A short concert programme was then the items being as folloivs:—Sean tnubhas, by Miss Jean Dow; vocal solo, by Miss V. Murray; saw selection, by Mr J. Read; vocal solo, by J. James; violin solo, by Mr D. Callagan; recitation, by Mr T. Gordon; bagpipe selections, by Master lan Dow; Highland fling, by Miss J. Dow; vocal solo, by Mr James. Miss I. Murray, Mrs G. Cochrane, and Piper lan Dow played the various accompaniments. Dancing was then indulged in, music being supplied by Mrs G. Cochrane, while Mr B. Andrews made an efficient M.C. Extras were supplied by Mrs J. Roulston, Mrs J. Cochrane, and Miss E. Hallum. Supper was handed round, alter which lan Dow piped on to the stage the birthday cake, baked and iced by Mrs Dow. The president then called on Mrs T. Gordon, of the Hillend Women's Division, to light the four candles, Mrs Dow, a vice-president of our institute, to extinguish, and Mrs Morgan, our first president, to cut the cake. Greetings were extended by the visitors. Dancing was then resumed. During the evening Miss Smollett' and partner were fortunate in winning both the lucky spot and Monte Carlo waltze.

The Milton Institute held an enjoyable third birthday party last Friday evening. The president (Mrs J. Gray) extended a welcome to all. After finding partners by " crazy cut cards " all present entered iiito a novel competition. " Tails."- Mrs Kempthorne and Mr H. Moore (Dunedin) were the winning pair. A short play entitled ' Our Aunt from California" was presented by six members of the institute Dramatic Club. Solos were given by Misses Curran and Stewart, recitations bv Misses Wills and Wilson, and a Scotch reading by Mrs Sinclair. The accompaniments were played by Miss Curran. After supper came the chief event of the evening—cutting of the birthday cake. Led off br Piper Burleigh playing " " Highland "Rosy." The cake, which had been made ami suitably iced by the president, was carried by her through the hall, with the committee forming a guard of honour. The candles were ]it by Mrs T. Scott and extinguished by Mrs Sinclair, and the cake cut by Mrs H. Wilson. Mrs Sinclair (vice-president), on behalf of the committee presented Mrs Gray with a small token. The Rev. Mr Kempthorne complimented the institute on attaining its third birthday. "What husbands think of the institute " was responded to by Mr R. M. Hay in humorous vein. The floor was then cleared for dancing.
