PALMERSTON Motor Accidents While travelling towards Palmerston from Central Otago on Thursday, a private car, containing two male passengers, skidded on the frozen road and overturned. Although the car was extensively damaged, both occupants escaped injury. The Central Otago road, especially on the Pig Root, where the accident occurred, is reported to be in a dangerous condition for motorists. Another minor accident occurred on the main hill out of Parlmerston, when a freight lorry, belonging to, the South Island Forwarding Company, overturned. Building Activities Palmerston is at present experiencing a boom in building. At least three new houses are under construction, while several dwellings have had extensive alterations made to them. Dramatic Concert As a result of the Dramatic Society's entertainment on Wednesday evening the local Fire Brigade should benefit to the extent of some pounds. The Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) thanked those, present for their support. Both the plays presented and the individual performances showed a considerable improvements on any of the previous efforts. At the close of the evening, the president (Mrs C. P. Smith) was presented with a tastefully mounted autographed programme as a memento of the occasion and as a grateful acknowledgment of her efforts for the betterment of the club. Special mention was also made of the very fine work of Miss N. Moodie and Mrs Jull, the joint producers. LAWRENCE Borough Council The monthly meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was held on Monday night. There were present- the Mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor) in the chair, Crs Martin, Colgan, Talboys, Cotton, Gray, and Pitt. It was decided to strike for the year 1935-36 a general rate of Is, 4d in the £l, a water rate of 6d, a hospital rate of 3d, a lighting rate of 5d in the £l, and a sanitation fee of £1 3s. The Works Committee reported that the total cost of the proposed tar-seal-ing of the remaining portion of the main highway (63 chains) would amount to £663. The borough's share would be £165 15s. —It was resolved to make application to the Highways Board to have the amount placed in this year's estimates. For the kerbing of Whitehaven street, it was estimated that the cost of material would amount to £4O 13s 7d in jarrah and £37 12s in concrete. —It was decided that the work be held over for two months.

A deputation from the picture proprietors, Messrs Oliver . and Weatheral], waited upon the council in reference to the acoustic properties and heating of the hall.—lt was decided to grant "up to £lO for draping portion of the hall, and to institute inquiries about a suitable neater for the hall. The Waterworks Committee reported that, owing to the recent wet weather a big slip had taken place in the race, but by prompt employment of five men it had been cleared in a day. Accounts amounting to £l3l 14s 9d were passed for payment.

School Sports Rugby football and basketball teams from tho'Tapanui District High School visited the Lawrence District High School on Wednesday. At Rugby football, Tapanui defeated Lawrence by 10 points to nil. Mr L. Gray was the referee. Tapanui also won the basketball by 7 goals to 1. ' Misses Johnstone and Marshall acted as referees. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea before leaving for home.

Rugby Football For the matches played under the jurisdiction of the South Tuapeka Rugby Football Sub-union in the eighth round. Tuapeka Motith beat Lawrence by 12 points to 6. For the winners tries were scored by W. Bellaney (2), J. Tappin, and Scott, and for Lawrence, H. Weatherall and L. Gray scored tries. At Beaumont, Waitahuna beat Beaumont by 16 points to 3. For the winners B. Hore, M. Crane, W. Irving, A. Ryan scoredtries, and B. Hore and A. Ryan each converted one try. Harvey scored a try for Beaumont. The matches for nest Saturday are as follows: —Lawrence v. Beaumont, at Lawrence (Mr W. J. Cavanagh); Waitahuna v. Tuapeka Mouth, at Waitahuna (Mr W. M'Culloch). At Lawrence a curtainraiser will be played between the Beaumont and Lawrence Schools.

Queen Carnival Keen interest is already being evinced in the queen carnival which is being conducted to raise funds for the construction of swimming baths. It has been decided that a queen from the Ex-pupils' Association will be nominated in place of one from the young people, and this alteration should strengthen the position considerably. 1 The Lawrence District High School ex-Pupils' Club has already contributed £25 to the Swimming Baths Fund.
