The Arawa District Trust Board, which is concerned at the distressing housing conditions amongst some of the Natives in its district, has decided to raise a loan of £2OOO for the immediate relief of more urgent cases. Members of the board have recently carried out a tour of the district and have visited a number of the r.ore remote maraes, where they found Natives living in one-roomed whares, which, according to the chairman of the board, Mr Tai Mitchell, could not even be dignified by the name of shanties. Urgent representations are being made by the board to the Government to expedite the promised legislation to assist the Natives to obtain better housing condition.
