ABSORPTION OF UNEMPLOYED LOCAL BODIES PROMISE .SUPPORT (Pes United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 25. The resolution of a" recent conference in Christchurch advocating major publio works for unemployment relief and an increase in the winter sustenance rates was endorsed to-night in nearly all particulars by a conference of Auckland local bodies and other interests. The following motion was carried: — "That this coaference reaffirms the desirability of major schemes absorbing large numbers of unemployed being put in hand by the Public Works Department at standard rates of pay; that the representatives of local bodies' present pledge themselves to do all in their power to assist in the carrying out of such schemes; and that at least 20 per cent, should be added to the rates of those on sustenance during the winter months." The Christchurch suggestion that the wages tax should be increased from lOd to Is to meet the extra cost was not endorsed.
