THE OPOHO TRAM TERMINUS

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I notice from the report of the meeting of the City Council on Monday evening that the Mayor referred to the desirability of extending the Anderson's Bay tramline. A far greater and a more immediate necessity is that of the alteration of the Opoho tram terminus. At the Opoho terminus the car is parked on a grade so very steep that it has been known to start off on its own accord. It has twice done eo while the writer has been aboard. To lessen the grade the tramway authorities constructed a ditch into the road, so that the tram rests in a trough which is a danger to wheel traffic when a tram is not in occupation of it. The position of the terminus, lying as it does right across Black's road, also constitutes a menace to traffic, as road vision is almost completely obscured when a tram is standing there, and the narrowness of the road causes up-traffic to pass the tram on the wrong side. A simple and popular remedy would be to carry the tramline a few chains further up the hill to where flat ground is available and traffic would not be obstructed. As our present council is looking lor suitable work for the unemployed, perhaps it could see its way clear to carry out this very necessary work.—l am, etc., Opoho. Dunedin, June 23.
