LIVE STOCK EMBARGO

QUESTION OF REMOVAL OPINION IN NORTH OTAGO (Special to Daily Times) OAMARU, May 10. Considerable discussion took place at the meeting of the North Otago A. and P. Association yesterday on the lifting of the embargo on the importation of stock from Great Britain on account of foot-and-mouth disease. Some members maintained that the risk of introducing the disease into New Zealand was too great, and, if anything, the restrictions should be tightened up. Others submitted with equal emphasis that with the system of quarantine there was no risk of the disease coming to New Zealand through stock, which was now imported through Canada and New Zealand. A motion was proposed that the meeting reaffirm the previous i;esolution that, the embargo be maintained, and an amendenient was moved that the association should agree to the lifting of the embargo provided that the precautions were strictly adhered to. The amendment was lost by 14 votes to 9, and the previous resolution was reaffirmed. CONDITIONAL REMOVAL A TARANAKI RESOLUTION. (Per United Tress Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10. The North Taranaki executive of the Farmers' Union to-day passed a resolution in favour of the lifting of the embargo on the importation of live stock; but withholding its approval until an assurance is given by the Government that the machinery exists for coping with an outbreak of disease should such occur.
