LIFE SAVING

SECONDARY BOYS* CHAMPIONSHIPS OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL WINS SHIELD The annual life saving championship competition for boys from Otago and Southland secondary schools, which carries with :t the Royal Life Saving Society's shield, was held in the Municipal Baths yesterday. Three teams —two from the Otago Boys' High School and one from the Southland High School —competed, the local school's No. 1 team winning after a fairly close contest. The visiting boys gave a particularly line display of land drill, their work being clean and crisp throughout, and whilst they also gained high?st marks for water work, their towing was slow, and they consequently dropped back in water work. Whilst it was not carried through with the snap and accuracy of the Southland team, the land drill of the Otago boys was, nevertheless, of a fairly high standard, and the water work, especially of the No. 1 team, was very little inferior to that of the visitors. In water time, however, both Otago teams scored we! l , and in this bection the winners more than regained the points they had dropped in land drill and water work, and scored a comfortable victory by !)A points. At the conclusion of <Jie life-saving eontest, a relay race was held, and was won easily by Southland, whose well-balanced and speedy learn averaged 17 4-5 seconds for the length. Messrs P. A. Mathieson, H. H. Henderson and D. C. Bannatyne acted as judges. The teams were as follows: Otago Boys' High School No. 1— C. M'Gregor, E. Lewis, S. W. Jarvis, H.
