Architect to the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's during the most momentous year in the cathedral's history, Sir Mervyn Macartney died a few weeks ago at the age of 79. ■ Shortly after Sir Mervyn's appointment the news came to light of cracks and other defects in the cathedral fabric. Sir Mervyn shouldered the responsibility for the repair of the vast building. He was rewarded by a knighthood in 1930. He retired last year. Before going to St. Paul's, Sir Mervyn was consulting architect to Durham Cathedral. He was one of the founders of the Art Workers' Guild and of the Arts and Crafts Exhibitions Society.
