WIDESPREAD OBSERVANCE AIR REVIEW IN MOSCOW (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MOSCOW, May 1. The Soviet, in the presence of M. Stalin and other leaders, staged an air review over Red square. Six hundred aeroplanes, including four-motored bombers and swift interceptors, 30 new superfast attackers and two-motored monoplanes with a speed of 200 miles per hour, participated. A parade of army and navy tank units was also held. Civilian processions followed, featuring an enormous serpent typifying Imperialism wearing a Japanese cap over a pig’s snout, marked with a swastika. Similar parades were held in other cities. RIOTS IN FRENCH TOWN PARIS, May 1. May Day opened with a Communist riot at Bagnolet, knives and revolvers being freely used. One person was killed. PRECAUTIONS IN MADRID MADRID, May 1. Troops were confined to barracks, though armed guards patrolled the streets, « NO DISORDERS IN CANADA VANCOUVER, May 1. May Day in Canada passed without disorder. A blizzard with a foot of snow and a howling gale routed 5000 Communist coal miners marching on the town of Corbin/ in British Columbia, following strike riots, with the avowed intention of driving out the provincial police. At Vancouver 12,000 paraders * sang the “International,” and refused to carry the Union Jack. AMNESTY IN AUSTRIA VIENNA, May 1. Three police and five Communists were killed in riots in the Bulgarian village of Enina. Six hundred political prisoners were set free as a May Day amnesty in Austria. The police swooped down on Communist headquarters and arrested 600 as a sequel to a bomb thrown in the police station in a suburb of Vienna, wounding four, LONDON EXCHANGE OPENED LONDON, May 1 The Stock Exchange opened to-day for the first time on May Day for 134 years. SNOWSTORM IN GERMANY LONDON, May 2. (Received May 2, at 8 p.m.) The May Day celebrations in Germany were marred by a snowstorm. Plans for'to open-air demonstration in Munich were suddenly abandoned, the official excuse being inclemency of the weather. The unofficial reason was the failure of the workers to turn out in sufficient numbers, though last year 50,000. attended a similar parade. Today only a few hundred arrived. Later in the day an indoor meeting was attended by 4000. There is a growing disinclination on the part of Bavarian workers to attend demonstrations. The only really impressive Labour demonstration was in Moscow, May Day displays were ignored in Italy, Bulgaria and Rumania, while in Austria thousands of Vienna’s poorest unemployed, mostly old women, waited many hours expecting the distribution of free meals. They were disappointed as the official arrangements provided an inadequate quantity of food, so. the unemployed went hungry. Public services in France functioned normally and there was not _ a single arrest in Paris for May Day disorders. which is a record. PARADES IN NEW YORK NEW YORK, May 1. (Received May 2, at 5.5 p.m.) Between 100,000 and 150,000 Radicals demonstrated here to-day in traditional fashion, celebrating international Labour Day. Because of the continued inability to form “ a united front,” Commpnists and Socialists held separate parades through the down-town business section. The Communists claimed 60.000 marchers and the ( Socialists about twice as many, although police estimates indicated about half that number. The Communists carried the usual gaudy red banners denouncing war, Fascism, and other “ manifestations of capitalism.” Thousands of police guarded the line of march, but there was no disorder or violence; in fact, most of the demonstrators displayed a carnival spirit rather than a revolutionary, aspect. Smaller Left Wing demonstrations were held in the principal cities throughout the nation, as in Mexico City and most of the capitals of South America, but with little or no violence reported.
