POPPY DAY APPEAL

RECORD AMOUNT COLLECTED GENEROSITY OF PUBLIC OVER £IOOO RAISED Concrete proof that the public of Duncdin is not forgetting its debt to those who gave their youth and strength in defence of the Empire during the war years, was forthcoming yesterday when the annual Poppy Day Appeal of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers' Association resulted in a record collection for the city and suburbs. There is no worthier appeal than this, which is made on behalf of those ex-servicemen who are in need of assistance, and it would have been difficult indeed to find a person in the city streets yesterday who was not wearing the red poppy—the Emblem ot Remembrance. . From early in the morning until darkness fell, willing helpers were on the streets selling poppies, and when the takings stopped coming in last night it was found that the record sum of £IOBO 7s 7d had been taken in the city and during the house-to-house canvass by means of which the suburbs were thoroughly combed during day. Last year the final total for Dunedin and its immediate environs was £IOO7 9s 7d. • The organisation was based on the same lines as last year, and the organiser (Mr O. L. Fercns) stated last night that he was thoroughly satisfied with the results obtained. "We cannot speak too highly of the whole-hearted support given by the people of Dunedin to the appeal," said the president of the Dunedin Returned bokhers Association (Mr A. Thomas). • "The present figure constitutes a record, and it is expected that when all the town and country returns come to hand last year's total of £2013 6a will be easily beaten. The present result could not have been attained without the ready assistance of a largo band of willing and efficient helpers, and the association is proud of the loyal support that is always forthcoming for this appeal.' The sale of poppies was completed at 6 o'clock, and shortly after 8 o'clock the city total was known. This was made possible by the services of a number of tellers from the National Bank of New Zealand, who shared the work of counting up the money. ' The following is a list of the amounts collected at the stalls and in the various districts: — , £ 8. d.
