SWIMMING

PRIMARY SCHOOLS* CARNIVAL CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED DUNEDIN NORTH WINS BEGG CUP The annual Otago State Primary Schools' Swimming Championships were concluded last evening, when, as on the opening night, a large attendance of spectators watched the racing. Probably because the majority of the youngsters had to a certain extent conquered the nervousness that was very evident in the swimming of the heats, times in the finals, in most cases, showed a considerable improvement over those registered the first night, and in several races some exciting finishes were staged. The only record broken during the evening was in the Girls' Junior Relay, in which the Dunedin North intermediate team —a speedy, well-balanced combination —lowered the figures turned in by the same school last year (41 l-ssec) by a second. The Begg Cup, which, goes to the school scoring the highest aggregate points, was retained by Dunedin North Intermediate, which won the trophv last year with 40 points, Arthur Street being runners-up with 18 points. During the evening exhibitions of swimming and diving were given by W. J. and S. W. Jarvis, Reg Geddes and P. E. Mathieson,
