MODERN GERMANY
POWER OF INDUSTRIALISTS INTENSE NATIONAL FEELING IPek United Press Association’) WELLINGTON, April 11. Modern Germany greatly interested Mr H. H. Tombs, of Wellington, when he made a two and a-half months’ visit there. He returned to-day by the Rangitata. Industrialists, ho said, really controlled the situation. He did not think Herr Hitler was quite the power those in other countries sometimes thought he was. He had certainly galvanised the people into action. On all sides there was striking evidence of a feeling of nationalism. There was, however, no freedom. The people were complaining bitterly about their poverty. In a word, they appeared to be hobbled. The Germans were offering CO per cent, reductions in railway fares and almost double the market rate on exchange of the English pound for a certain period to encourage tourists.
