SHEEP DOG TRIALS

WAITAKI COLLIE CLUB JUBILEE MEETING CONTINUED (From Our Special Reporter.) KUROW, April 11. Last night heavy rain fell at Kurow, a total of 46 points being recorded, and prosxiects of a fine day did not appear very bright for People’s Day in connection with the Waitaki Collie Dog Cluo Jubilee Trials. However, this morning broke fine and a start was made about 7.30. The Heading and Bring Back event, which was commenced yesterday, was continued in dull weather, h airly heavy showers fell during the afternoon, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the public, who turned out in large numbers. It was estimated that nearly 800 people were present. This was easily the largest crowd that has ever been present at dog trials at Hakataramea. . Commenting on the courses, the judge (Mr Charles Hay. of Masterton) said a short head course was not as easy as it looked, and many of the competitors took it too cheaply. The long head course was the most difficult one he knew of at the present time in the Dominion. It was an exceptionally hard test for dogs, and the pull was the longest distance of any course of Head, Bring Back, and Yard event. Mr Hay said that there were a great many splendid dogs, and the work generally was of a very good standard. The quality of the dogs was excellent, and there was some very nice work in every department, especially at penning. Commenting on the work in to-day’s event, the judge said the work was very good. Out of 70 odd entries only about two dogs failed to get the sheep, and this was very creditable on such a difficult course. Included in to-day’s programme was an exhibition competition for a short drive through luirdlles eight feet apart and vard. This competition attracted _ six entries, and W, M’lllwraith, of Hastings, who competed in the huntaway class at the first trials of the club, acted as judge, and gave every satisfaction. This competition was held on the opposite side of the ground and attracted many interested spectators. The heading and bring back event was concluded shortly after 4.30 p.m., and Mr C. Parker’s (Fairlie) Tweed proved the winner, with 47 points out a total of 50. Tweed put up a very consistent performance throughout his run. Mr J. Anderson’s (Oinarama) Toby again was a close second, being half a point behind the winner, and Mr C. H. Smith’s Chance was another half point behind,. Chance had the best out run, gaining the possible 22 points. The special prize for the best high-country heading dog for mustering in connection with this competition was won by Mr J. Tiddy’s Knight.
