Mrs Brighton gave a demonstration on pyjama and shirt-making. The competition, “An article made from a 251 b flour bag,” was won by Mrs 11. Clark and Miss Stuart (equal) first, with Mrs Blacklaws, sen., second. The hostesses were Mesdames R. Clark and Beatty.

The annual meeting of the Mosgiel Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Miss Hendry presiding. The motto for the evening was, ‘ Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Miss Souter’s singing of two songs from Schubert was much enjoyed. A competition, “ Fishing,” was won by Miss Graham. The office-bearers for the ensuing year are:—President, Miss Hendry; secretary. Miss Allan; treasurer, Mrs Taylor; committee —Misses Burn, Williamson, Souter, Swallow, Spedding, and Miller.

Tuapeka Mouth Women’s Institute held its seventh birthday party on Wednesday, April 3. Dr Radcliffe, of Balclutha, gave an address on his recent caravan tour through England and Scotland. Various items were given by Mrs A. Farrant, Miss Moore, and Messrs H. M'Gown, N. Young, J. Hardy, and D. Brown, and prizes for the highest number of points gained in the competitions throughout the year went to Mrs D. Brown 1, and Mrs Allan 2. Mrs Hayman, the retiring president, was presented with a bouquet and a gift. She then introduced the new president, Mrs Gordon Fraser. After supper the evening was spent in dancing.

The Naseby Institute met on Tuesday last. The motto for the evening was “If you cannot get what you like, like what you get.” The roll call was “Verse, - ’ or prose .relating to woman and friendship. Mrs A. E. Brown gave an address on the “ New South Wales Far West Children’s Health Scheme.” The competition for most articles in 'a. match box was won by Miss Mavis Francis, with Mrs G. W. Provan second. The hostesses were Mesdames Aloore and Inder.

The Waipiata Institute met on Wednesday. Mrs F. Roberts, president, presided. The motto was: “ The kindly word that falls to-day may bear its fruit tomorrow.” Roll call: “My Birthday and Birthplace.” A travel talk by Mrs Shand, a member of the Kyeburn Institute was much enjoyed. Competitions: Bowl of autumn tints, was won by Mrs F. Mathias, with Miss Roberts second; passe partout work. Miss C. Mathias 1, Mrs Weir 2; best sweets (four varieties, three of each), Miss C. Mathias 1, Mrs Weir 2. The new committee members were hostesses.

Warepa Women’s Institute met on Tuesday, when Mrs Cross, president, presided. The motto was “ Honesty is the best policy, and on the road through life let your motto be ‘My word is my bond.’ ” The programme for the annual meeting of the Otago Federation in Balclutha was received and resolutions discussed. It was agreed that a delegate be sent to the Dominion annual conference in Auckland in July, and Mrs T. P. Stewart was appointed. The roll call was “A game for n winter evening house party,” and the competition “ Biefet three months’ programme,” the results of which will be announced at next meeting. Mrs A. Murray, of Taieri, gave a demonstration on “ Leather Work,” and showed some samples of this handicraft. Hostesses were Mesdames Milligan and MTntosh, and Miss Joyce Aguew.

The Kyeburn Institute met on Wednesday, Mrs Carey presiding. The motto was “ Learn by your mistakes, but don’t cry over them, best redeem the past by forgetting them.” The roll call was “Where I would like to spend a holiday, and why.” Mrs A. W. Pearson gave a talk on the “Borstal Institution.” The competition, “ Oven and Girdle Scones,” was won by Mrs Telfer, with Miss Wilson second and Mrs M'Lean third. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Mathewson and Griffiths, and Misses M. Wilson and F. Hore.

The Dun back Institute met on Wednesday, Mrs Kelly presiding. The roll call was, “ Uses of Kerosene,” and the competition, which was won by Mrs Matlieson, with Mrs Kelly second and Mrs Farquharson third, was “Something made from wool in colours of brown, orange, and gold.” Passe-partout work was demonstrated by Miss Scollay and a social half-hour conducted by Mrs Brownlie and Miss Murray. Hostesses were Mrs Hewett and Misses Diem and M’Millan.
