NOTES ON THE RACING

SEVERAL SURPRISE VICTORIES. (Special to Daily Times) WHANGAREI, April 11. There were several surprise wins at the opening of the Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting to-day, and there were several good dividends, Imamint, Royal Secret, and Gay Cockade all returning solid prices. Gay Defence reached the front quickly from Racing Lady in the Trial Stakes and beat her very easily by three lengths, Kilousoa coming from a long way back to get third, three-parts of a length away. Master Rex, who was on the outside at the top, ran on to get fourth, ahead of Gas Acre and the win favourite. Red Hawk, who raced below expectations. Te Hai and Muskon had the finish of the Portland Hack Handicap to themselves, and after a sustained tussle in the straight Te Hai won by a head. Lap Up came from a good way back to get third, four lengths away, and Roman Mascot, who should be improved by the race, was fourth, ahead of Teddy Boy and Grand Tonic. Te Hai began from the extreme outside, but went out brilliantly to reach the front quickly. He is a good sort of three-year-old gelding by The Ace and should win more races. Muskon iias never run a better race and is becoming more solid.

Only five started in the MTnnes Memorial Handicap, and Imamint, the outsider of the field, effected a surprise in winning narrowly from the win favourite, Gay Marigold. Korokio and Bonny Gay led early, but Bonny Gay assumed command after going three furlongs, and carried on the running to the straight entrance, where Gay Marigold had run up second on the rails, with Imamint and Monanui handy. Imamint stayed on best in a fine contest to win by a head from Gay Marigold, who defeated Bonny Gay by a length and a-quarter. It was Imamint’s first attempt over a mile and aquarter, and she finished very solidly. Although there were only five runners, the Northland Hack Hurdles provided a good contest, victory going to Blue Bonnet, who was the outsider on the win machine. Volition was responsible for the early pace, but bored out badly round the turn out of the straight and gave way to Benighted, who led into the straight from Blue Bonnet. Gascelle and Volition, Benighted and Blue Bonnet were together at the last fence, and the latter finished solidly to win by a length and a-half. Volition was two lengths away third. Blue Bonnet registered one of his best performances to date.

Boughal scored a decisive victory in the Stewards’ Handicap. Inipasto and Boughal were together in front for about two furlongs, when Boughal drew out and went on to win by a length and a-half from Crooning, who beat Hampton Park by half a head. Lord Willonyx was a close fourth. Boughal was too brilliant for the opposition. The top-weight, Gay Cockade, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Settlers’ Handicap. Royal Potoa began from the outside, but she rushed to the front round the first turn, from Whararaana. Gay Cockade joined Royal Potoa in the lead nearing the home turn, and went on to win decisively from the win favourite, Magic Mint, who was not well placed early. Orefield was patiently ridden and finished better than usual to get third. There was another surprise when Royal Secret scored in the Maungatapere Hack Handicap. The win favourite, Gay Egypt, jumped out smartly from No. 1 position and was joined at the end of a couple of furlongs by who led into the straight with Gay Egypt, Muskon being next. Laudatory and Gay Egypt both failed in the last half-fur-long. where Royal Secret came through to win going away. Hawthorn was running on in second place, just boating Solo Song. Laudatory made a big effort in

the middle stages and might have won if she had not commenced her run so early. The win favourite, Sir Abb, won the Waipu Handicap'in good style. He was badly checked when Karangapai took the lead along the back from _ Royal Appellant, who came back on him. __ However, he was nicely placed behind Karangapai and Royal Appellant at the turn, and finished in the most resolute fashion to score by a length and a-quarter from Tybalt, who also ran on soundly. Jalldy Karo came from the rear to get third, and Royal Appellant was fourth. Sir Abb should soon be capable of winning in better company.
