TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel. Basis of Business The .single pool of 70-20-10 will be in operation at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting. At Oamaru The principal events at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 11 will carry stakes of 300sovs and 200sovs. A Good Card The Ashburton Trotting Club has played a most attractive card in presenting a parade of Sapling Stakes candidates at the meeting which takes place to-morrow. “Ye Layde Faire ” An interesting feature of the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting was the success achieved by women owners, no fewer than six being represented on the winning lists. Mrs C. M'Gregor’s candidates, Peter Junior and Gold Dredge, each won a race, Mute scored for Mrs I. E. Sweetapple, and Mrs J. Mahoney was successful with Silver Watch. The wins of Charteris Bay, Tinokaha and Worthy Nor, who each registered their first victory, placed three new owners on the winning list. Mrs H. Metcalfe is the owner of Charteris. Bay, Tinokaha races in the interest of Miss M. E-. Tulloch and Mrs C. Maddock is part-owner with Mr D. Hedley of Worthy Nor.

Official Silence When Nimbus, who finished fourth in the Goldfields Handicap at the Thames trots, returned to the enclosure an angry demonstration was made by a section of the crowd, the horse and driver, A. W. Broughton, being loudly hooted. Nimbus had won the Trotting Cup on Thursday. Mr A. E. Commons, stipendiary steward, instituted an inquiry and called upon the owner, Mr E. J. Parkes, and the driver to explain the running of Nimbus, as compared with the first day. After a lengthy and exhaustive inquiry the committee decided to take no action. Apparently the public saw enough to make a noise, but failed to break the official silence as to the reasons for the verdietl At Ashburton The Ashburton Trotting Club should be well satisfied with the response made by owners for its meeting, for though two fields only number 15 between them, the evenness of the quality engaged ensures these races being the most exciting on the programme. It has been proved over and over again (says the Press) that big fields are nof necessary for the best class racing nor for speculative purposes. The Dunbar Handicap field with eight acceptors, and a short limit of 48 yards, should provide the race of the day, for these horses are of very even calibre, and have proved themselves over a jourpey. Tempest, on 48 yards behind, is probably better placed there than he would be on the limit, for in his races he must be carefully nursed and his big effort reserved for a short, sharp sprint. With a race run to suit him, he will be very troublesome over the last two furlongs. Rey Spec has registered a number of sterling performances during the season, and at times a slow beginner, he has not always enjoyed the best _of luck in the running. Of his stamina and speed there is no question, and he will probably be the favourite. He has previously shown winning form on the big Ashburton course, and the small field will be all in his favour. Great Logan has recently shown his best form over sprint distances, but carefully nursed he is quite capable of going two miles. Todd Lonzia will be well suited by the big track, and though there is a prejudice against trotters when racing amongst pacers, he is- above the average. Gay Gordon has been racing well without winning races, and Craganour would only need to return to his best form to make things interesting. Willow Wave has not always left the mark correctly, but when he elects to do his work from the start , he is a good class pacer, while Bracken’s consistently good form entities her to strong support.
