MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula, County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, and was attended by Crs H. Macandrew (in the chair), J. Cross, W. D. Stewart, J. T. Irvine, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon,' J. Hellyer, R. Brunton and D. J. S. Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr G. Dick, of Sandymount, wrote requesting that the road leading into his property should be metalled, and that the fence should be repaired round the Sandymount School, as it was dangerous for children. —The engineer was instructed to spread 30 yards of gravel on the road. Mr Robert Clearwater, of Wickliffo Bay, wrote requesting that the council should reopen two drains on his property- which had been opened up previously two years ago.—lt was decided that the work should be carried out as soon as possible. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote in answer to a letter from the council in connection with access to the fishing ground known as Puddingstone Rock, stating that during Mr Allan’s ownership certain persons were in the habit of passing through the property in order to reach the rock mentioned, but the position had now changed somewhat since the subdivision of the block, and certain occupiers had found it necessary to stop persons passing through owing to their, disturbing the stock and camping on the ground without permission. There was no question that a formal right of way had ever been granted, and the department was of the opinion that the granting of legal access was unwarranted. Persons desiring to pass through could obtain permission from the occupiers concerned. —Received. The medical officer of health (Dr T. M'Kibbon) wrote recommending the appointment of Mr S. 0. Wells, inspector of health, of Dunedin, as a sanitary inspector, in place of Air R. W. Connor, who had been transferred to Gore. —The appointment was confirmed. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board (Mr John Jacobs) advised that the board’s estimates for the current year would be £41,896 18s, a reduction of about £SOO on the levy made last yearv—ißeceived,

Mr L. Bcnnet, of Anderson’s Bay, wrote asking if the council w r ould be prepared to lend three men for a day to assist in concreting a path in exchange for 18 feet of the corner of Nicholson street and Croney terrace. — The offer w’as accepted. A cheqquc for £lO vvas received as part profits of the Big Prize List Art Union, the money to be devoted to the relief of distress at Portobello. —Received. An invitation was received from the Portobello Returned Soldiers’ Committee asking the council to attend the Anzac Day service at the Portobello Coronation Hall on April 25.—The invitation was accepted. Messrs Cook, Lemon, and Cook wrote stating that they now had the plan defining the High road on the Otago Peninsula, formally consented to by the administrators of the estate of the late A. J. Shand. The administrators had consented to the plan on th| undertaking that no call would be made on the owners of the property or their tenants to set back or remove the existing fences where they encroached on the road line. —The chairman asked whether the owners laid any claim to the land between the fence and the boundary, as it belonged to the Crown, and it was decided that the chairman should interview the parties concerned. Mr M. H. Nyhon, of Broad Bay, wrote requesting that the road leading to his Sandymount property should be attended to, as it was in a dangerous condition for vehicular traffic. —The matter was left to the engineer to attend to. A letter was received from Mr W. A. Palmer, of Company Bay, asking that Clyde terrace should be gravelled.—The member for the riding was instructed to look into the matter. A letter was received from Mr T. Fleming, of Sandymount, requesting that the council should attend to the culvert at the entrance to his property as it was discharging over the road. —The matter was left to the engineer to attend to. Nine residents and ratepayers o! Broad Bay wrote calling the council's attention to the portion of the road immediately adjoining the school corner, as it was considered to be dangerous.—lt was agreed that the corner was a dangerous one, and it was decided to refer the matter to the engineer to submit a report as to the best means of improving the road. A letter was received from Mr John Clearwater stating that the corner of

Harbour terrace and James street required clearing up, nnd the culvert lengthening to his boundary.—lt was decided that the matter should be attended to. Mr W. N. Riddell, of Macaudrew Bay, wrote requesting the council to take steps to have \a motor car removed from Princes street, Wharfdale, where it had been lying for some years.—lt was agreed to instruct the owner of the car to have It removed within 14 days. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found five head of cattle wandering on the roads during the month, and complained of the number of unregistered dogs at Tomahawk. He had advised the owners of their liability to pay the tax.—The report was adopted, and it was agreed to notify the owners that steps would be taken against them if they did not register their dogs. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) reported as follows on the work done during the month; — Otago Heads Riding.—Widening has been done on the school road and Pipikariti road. Maintenance metal has'becn spread on the main highway. The walling reconstruction at Harrington Point is well in hand. Portobello Riding.—Water tables have been cleaned on the Portobello-Papanui Inlet road, and metal has been quarried in Weir’s quarry for spreading on adjacent roads. Sandymount Riding.—One slip on the bio-h road has been cleared, and a start has been made with the reconstruction of the surface of the Riddell’s to Hooper’s Inlet road. Highcliff Riding—General maintenance work has been done on the main highway, and 100 cubic yards of screenings spread. The grass has been chipped from the surface of Johnston’s road. Tomahawk Riding. Grading and other maintenance work has been done on the main highway, and the quarrying of metal has been continued. North-East Harbour Riding.—Grass has been chipped on Abbotsford road and scrub has been cut on Larnach road, and at Waverley. Maintenance work has been done on Princes street and High street, and Cosy Doll, and footpaths were formed. Broad Bay Riding.—Chipping of grass has been done in several streets in the Broad Bay township, and water tables were cleaned. Corse has been grubbed on the batters of the main road. Patch-

iug ■with screenings was done where necessary. The report was adopted. FINANCE. The clerk reported that the balance sheet of the county fund account,for the year ended March 31 showed a credit of £llOl 10s 2d. Outstanding rates totalled £095 6s 7d, as against £IOO2 5s 5d last year. All the riding accounts with the exception of Portobello showed a credit balance, the figures being as followsOtago Heads Riding, £6O 18s 9d; Sandymount Riding, £142 8s 10d; Highcliff Riding, £293 8s 10d; Tomahawk Riding, £ll9 8s lid; North-East Harbour Riding, £626 4s lid; Broad Bay Riding, £278 Is 8d; Portobello Riding (debit), £4l 11s 7d. All loans had been converted, and the total public debt was £925. —The balance sheet and statement of accounts were adopted. Accounts amounting to £922 15s were passed for payment. The chairman complimented the county clerk (Mr B. Noble) on the early preparation and audit of the balance sheet, as it had been audited by March 30, enc day before the end of the financial year. GENERAL. At it was the last meeting before the election, the chairman (Mr H. Macandrew) thanked the councillors, both individually and collectively, for their assistance during the last three years. He trusted that they would all stand again, and that the ratepayers would return them en bloc. Ho had nothing but pleasant recollections of Ids dealing with the council. On behalf of the council, the speaker extended thanks to the county clerk, the engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson), and the outside staff.— Messrs P. J. S. Robertson and J. J. Nyhon responded on behalf of the council and endorsed the chairman’s remarks in connection with the employees.
