GOLF

By Divot. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY St,. Clair.—First rounds Club Championships. Macandrew Bay.—Four-ball Bogey. ST. CLAIR NOTES The conditions for the second qualifying rounds of the championships, which were played last Saturday, were much less favourable than they were for the first round. The ground was heavier, and there was a stiff breze blowing to add to the difficulties. Consequently, the scoring was not of a high standard. In the Club Championship there were a number of unexpected results. D. C. Bennie, in dropping from first to third place, was the victim of misfortune. After playing steady golf for the outward half, which he completed in 36, he was unable to find his ball at the eleventh from a good drive. He played has third from the tee and then discovered that a ball which he had seen on the fairway previously and which he had then thought belonged to his marker was the one he had first played. The rules provided that he had to suffer the penalty, however, and he holed out with the second ball in an inglorious 8. He played the remaining holes in steady figures for a 76. Matheson played a steady round of 73, which enabled him to qualify first with an aggregate of 144. Matheson’s round was similar to that of last week. On the outward half he had two bad holes—fi's at the fourth and eighth. His second half in 33, however, was obtained by good golf. /Wight followed his first round of 72 with another steady round of 73 obtained in characteristic steady play to qualify second. Clayton was out in the good figures of 3 0, but, like his marker, Bennie, he struck trouble at the eleventh, which cost him 6. The remaining holes were done in good figures for a round of 73. A. B. Watt again justified the belief that he is one of the coming low-markers in the club. His round of 74 in the conditions was quite as good as, if not better than, his 72 two weeks ago, and it had the added virtue of being performed under greater strain and in a more convincing manner. It enabled him to qualify for the match play stages, and also gave him, equal with J. W. Bain, first place in the senior handicap event. B. C. O’Driscoll, who had a very fine first round of 71, fell away in the second round to 81, but his aggregate of 152 enabled him..to qualify fairly easily. W. N. Satterthwaite wa« again steady, and qualified equal with O’Driscoll with 152. There was a tie for last place to qualify between W. M'Ghie and D. S. M'Lean, and in the draw for last place M'Ghie was the lucky one. A rather unusual feature of this year’s qualifying rounds was that the reigning champion did not qualify. Drake apparently struck a bad patch, and was unable to strike form in the qualifying rounds. Another unexpected failure was that of A. Lawrence. Lawrence has been playing fairly steady golf of late, and should have had no difficulty in returning cards of about 75. The best he could do, however, was two 79’s. The draw for the first round to be played on Saturday is as follows: Matheson v. M'Ghie, Clayton v. O’Driscoll. Wight v. Watt, and Satterthwaite v. Bennie. INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP , J. W. Bain headed the qualifying list in this section with two very meritorious rounds of 78, which left him with an aggregate three strokes better than V. H. Fahey, who in turn was three strokes better than J. Delbridge. This Championship promisee to be a very keenly-contested one, as does the Junior Championship. In this last F. W. Dixon was very consistent with two 83’s. This gave him a lead of four strokes on the field, W. G. Kindley being second with 170. There was another big gap between second and third, M. O’Dnscoll being next with 177. The handicap events in both senior and junior sections showed good results—--06, a tie between A. B. Watt and J. W. Bain in the Senior, and an outright win for M. H. Tonkinson with a fine 65 in the Junior. OTAGO NOTES J. H. M'Dougall had a very fine round of 72 for a net 67 to win the senior event in the St. Andrew’s Cross competition played at Balmacewen last Satur-. day. Other good cards were returned by G. D. A. Ferguson 77 —8—69, R. R. Aspinall 80—10—70, and F. I. Dawson So_lo—7o. S. E. Field had another good round of 75 which gave him a net 72, and although it was not necessary, justified his reduction in handicap to 3. In the juniors there was a tie between J. W. Smeaton 84—16—68 and R. D. B. Paterson 84 —16 —68. MACANDREW BAY CLUB A single bogey handicap was held, at Macandrew Bay last Saturday in fairly difficult conditions. A stiff southerly tended to accentuate the necessity for accurate placing and a number of cards suffered in consequence. H. J. Rackley and D. Morris tied for first place with good cards of 3 up. L. S. Churchill, A. Stewart, A. E. Hellyer, and B. Deakcr all returned cards showing scores of “ all square.” The club has now affiliated with the New Zealand Golf Association, and steps are being taken to fix the standard scratch score, which is expected to be considerably less than that upon which the club is at present basing tile handicaps. ST. CLAIR LADIES’ CLUB On Tuesday a four-ball bogey competition was held at St Clair. The weather conditions were all' that could be desired, but the greens, which had just received a top dressing of sand, wore a little difficult. Tlie winning pair was Mrs Paterson and Mrs Maxwell with a card of 1 down. Mrs Paterson played off 14 and Mrs Maxwell off 22. The match for next Tuesday will be a L.G.U. Medal Match. INTERCLUB MATCH An interclub match’ between the Otago Ladies’ Club and the St. Clair Ladies’ Club has been arranged and will take place next Monday at Balmacewen.
