BALCLUTHA Demand for Pigs A district resident interested in the stock business has received an outside order to supply 200 bacon pigs, but is experiencing considerable difficulty in filling the order, although the price offered is a good one (6d a lb). This price is 'on the hooks" at the freezing works for pigs weighing from 1201 b to 1501 b. Apparently few farmers in this district raise pig 6 for killing in any quantity; in fact, the average farmer merely keeps two or three for his own use. Methodist Flower Show The Balclutha Methodist Church conducted an excellent flower show in connection with the harvest thanksgiving services. ALEXANDRA Antique Exhibition The proposal to hold an antique exhibition in Alexandra in aid of the funds of the Alexandra District High School is now well under way, and another meeting of the committee has been held. Mr A. I. Milne presided, and the following Citizens' Committee lias been appointed to dispose of the profits from the venture:—Messrs W. Bringans, C. E. Richards, R. E. M'Lay. A. I. Milne, the Rev. W. J. Bevis, and Mrs W. A. Bodkin, and Miss B. Miller. The date of the exhibition was fixed for May 1. 2, and 3. Irrigation Lands The present season has been a particularly good one for those irrigation farmers who have been able to obtain sufficient quantities of water. At Galloway some fine crops of lucerne have been harvested, some farmers having already cut their fourth crop. The Government has decided to grant those irrigators who were charged water rates last season for water they did not get on account of breaks in races or other causes a corresponding reduction in their water charges. Personal Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., is at present visiting the district. WAIKOUAITI Bowling On Monday evening Griffiths and Carson had again to prove their right to hold the Galloway Pairs Bowling Cup, R. Stewart and M'Knight of the Paiinerston Club being the challengers. The scores were, holders 23, challengers 15. Harvest Thanksgiving Last Sunday was harvest thanksgiving day in the Presbyterian churches of thin district, and both the Flag Swamp and Waikouaiti Churches were lavishly decorated with the fruits of garden and orchard. At the morning service at Waikouaiti the minister, the Rev. T. W. Potts, took as his subject the Parable of the Sowers. The subject for the evening service was " Christ, the Lord of Nature." The produce exhibited at both churches has been sent to the Dunedin Presbyterian orphanage. PALMERSTON Borough Council The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held on Monday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) and Crs Riddle, London, Warren, Morrison, Thomas, Haggie, M'Gregor, Thomson, and Earley. An application for a reduction in the rates of the shops owned by the late Mr W, Robertson was granted, half of this year's rales being remitted. The Plymouth Brethren asked for use of the Town Hall supper room on Sunday mornings and evening for church and for Sunday school in the afternoons. —The rent was fixed at 5s per Sunday. A letter was received from the secrtary of the Plunket Society asking for a donation. —The council made a donation of £3 3s.

The Palmerston Rugby Football Club and the Eastern District Rugby Football Sub-union applied for the use of the recreation ground this season. —The matter was left in the hands of the Domain Board to come to an agreement with the football and hockey clubs. The Railways district traffic manager (Mr H. L. Gibson) advised that no reduction was possible in the fares from Palmerston to Shag Point. —Received. Mr G. W. Beck (acting Railways district engineer) stated that no funds were available for the tar sealing of the road before the local railway station. —It was decided to approach the Railways Department after the end of tbe financial year. The commissioner of Crown lands (Mr N. C. Kensington) wrote stating that there was no public domain area on the foreshore in the vicinity of Shag Point The council decided to write to the Waitaki Council asking it to take the necessary steps to have the old picnic ground proclaimed a domain. The town clerk (Mr P. Gordon) was appointed to represent the council at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks to be held at Christchureh on March 20. The Mayor (Mr \V. R. Galloway) was appointed to represent the council at the Councillors' Association Conference of delegates to be held at Christchuvch on the same date. The withdrawal of the Lake County Council from the joint traffic inspector scheme -was accepted with regret. The nroportion of costs previously charged will be apportioned pro rata among other contributing authorities unless the Lake County Council reconsiders its decision. Cr London was thanked for attending the conference in this connection.
