ST. CLAIR CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL CONCLUDING NIGHT. The St. Clair Beach Improvement Association's carnival was concluded on Saturday night, when the gaily-decorated Esplanade was crowded with a merry throng until a late hour. The floodlit breakers and the multi-coloured lights provided an attractive spectacle, and added to the brightness of the evening. The St. Kilcla Band, the New Zealand champion combination, gave a demonstration of the quickstep, besides presenting an enjoyable programme from the rotunda. The numerous sideshows were well patronised. " chocolate alley " receiving marked attention from tht large crowd of pleasure seekers. The St. Clair Life Saving Club provided an amusing turn by taking a canoe to which was attached a number of small mirrors into the surf. A demonstration of life saving by the Otago team provided an entertaining half-hour. A cabaret enticed a large number of dancers, who entered with zest into the carnival spirit, the dancing continuing until neaTly midnight. Various novelties such as a treasure hunt, sand modelling competitions and screen star impersonations added to the fun of the day, the whole being eminently successful.
