THE SILVER JUBILEE

The announcement that the Prime Minister will represent the Dominion on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the accession of his Majesty the King was to be expected. It might,\ indeed, have been, made earlier since it is obviously the duty of Mr Forbes to attend the celebrations on behalf of New Zealand, along with the Prime Ministers of the other dominions. It is not so readily apparent that there is any sufficient reason why he should follow the bad example of the Prime Minister of Australia and be accompanied by a Ministerial and official retinue. It is true that opportunity is likely to be taken of the presence of the Prime Ministers in England to discuss various matters of interest, including the question of trade restrictions, with members of the British Government. But any suggestion that it would be advisable that Mr Forbes should have the benefit of an advisory staff in any discussions which may take place on such a subject, for instance, as the British Government's trade policy involves a reflection upon the High Commissioner and the London manager of the Meat Producers'Board, who are thoroughly au fait with the. details of the matter and are as competent to advise the Prime Minister as any persons- in New Zealand, however desirous the latter may be of an inexpensive visit to Great Britain at a time of exceptional gaiety in London.
