LAWN TENNIS

OTAGO DEFEATS NORTH OTAGO HIGH STANDARD OF SINGLES PLAY A representative lawn tennis match between Otago and North Otago, which was played at the Logan Park courts on Saturday, resulted in a convincing win for the home' team by 16 matches to 8. ' The match, however, was more closely contested than: this score.would indicate. Otago ;winning : . 36 sets,: 301 games, to North Otago's 21 sets, 278 games, so that the difference between the two teams was only 23 games. The standard of lawn'tennis was high, particularly in the Men's Singlesj in which some excellent matches were witnessed. Although Otago secured five out of the six games in this section, in four of them at least there was'very little difference between the respective players. The North Otago ladies .played well to secure three of their Singles, .but could ; win only, one Ladies' Doubles. It was in the Mixed Doubles' that the. Otago. team showed its superiority, taking all six matches with the'lose of only two; sets. The match was played,in fine weather, although; a tricky southerly. 1 wind troubled some of the players! There was a very poor attendance of. t the public. . ...... G. A. Pearce produced very much better lawn tennis than he did in the match "against South Canterbury on the previous Saturday, to defeat his, old rival, S. G. M'Dougall,: the ex-Dunediri player, M'Dougall played very accurately and placed well in the first set, which was fought, at a fast pace, and forced Pearce into errors with deep, fa6t drives to both wings. He took the lead at 3—2, and then won three games in succession for the set. Pearce came further into the, net in the second set, which hef.won 6—4, and in the third he di-ove beautifully, volleyed crisply, r and served with great'power. M'Dougall could not cope, with the sustained net attack which Pearce launched and.,-went down 6—3. L. M'Kinnon carried too many guns for S. Rawlinson, although the Otago man won the second set B—6. M'Kinnon's ground strokes were beautifully produced and accurately placed, and he bustled Eawlinson ail the way. '■ E. G. Boddy defeated B. Whelan, after losing the first set 6—2 ? in a very closely-contested match. Whelan showed ability to pick up Boddy's sliced drives, but in the closing stages the Otago man held the net position and volleyed well to take the last set 6—2. Bryan took the ' net at every' opportunity against A. Feathers,, and these forcing tactics won him the match m straight sets. Feathers served too many double-faults. E. A. Pearce met Familton, the veteran of many matches arid tournaments, and defeated him B—6, g—6, in a closely-fought match. Familton was very steady and slowed up the game in expert fashion, preventing Pearce from getting much pace into his volleys. The Otago" man, however, did most of the attacking and got home at the finish. Robertson (Otago) was down 5—3 against K. Walton, but pulled up to take the set B—6.8 —6. In the second set he concentrated on his opponent's backhand and followed his shots into the net. where the generally was able to finish off a rally.

' Miss Pattison employed the only tactics calculated to defeat Miss D. Miller, the North, Otago player and Otago champion. She took tlie net position whenever she could and tried to force .the pace, but Miss Miller's rock-like defence and wonderful powers of recovery stood her in good stead. Her drives were too accurately placed for Miss Pattison, who was caught out of position time and again. The Otago player could collect only two games, both of them in the second set. Miss Partridge went down to Miss Baikie 5 —6, 5 —6, the North Otago player being too steady and accurate. Miss Partridge led 5 —2 in the first set, but could not hold her advantage. In the second set she was down 5 —2, and pulled up to 5 all, before losing the odd game. Miss Barton was too strong for Miss Sumpter, although the loser fought well in- the second set, and Mrs Bradley (North Otago) beat Miss White by forcing the pace and keeping her opponent 'on the move. Miss Beckley and Miss Jolly both had good wins, although Miss Slater took Miss Jolly to three sets. M Dougall and M'Kinnon defeated G. Pearce and Rawlinson in straight sets in a fast match. The Otago men played we'd individually. Pearce smashing and serving brilliantly, but M'Dougalland M'Kinnon combined better and won critical points by '■areful play. Wheian and Feathers defeated Boddy and Bryan, their ground shots being accurate and severe. Bryan lapsed badly and gave Boddy little support in the last set. G. Pearce and llobcrtson won the only Men's Doubles by

defeatirigFamilton and Walton in a good match. The losers were very steady, but the Otago pair forced the pace throughout. Misses Miller and Baikie were too fast for Misses Pattison and White. The Otago ladies played very steady >aud careful lawn tennis, but the winners covered the court* at a fast pace and outplayed their opponents. The other Otago pairs won their matches fairly easily, although Misses Slater and Sumpter took a set from Misses Barton and Partridge. All the Mixed Doubles went to Otago, good combination being the deciding factor. The first set in the match between G. Pearce and Miss Pattison and M'Dougall and Miss Miller went to 28 games before the North Otago pair secured it, but Otago won the next two 6—4, 6—4. The North Otago team was weakened by the absence of R. Johnston and Misses K. Weavers and I. Romans, while Otago was without the services of H. J. Pollock and C. Deaker. ■■■ The following are the detailed.results, the Otago names being'mentioned first:— ' "■:• , .' MEN'S SINGLES. •■' , G. A. Pearce beat S. G. M'Dougall 2—6, 6—4, 6—3. ,; :■■;.-, - " J.
