The demolition of the last remaining portions of the famous city walls of Cadiz, built by the Romans and restored by Alfonso "El Sabio" of Castille in the thirteenth century, has begun. Only the historic and beautiful old gate known as the " Puerta de Tierra" will remain in memory of these walls, which represent ?000 years of Spanish history. The expansion of modern Cadiz has caused the successive destruction of the main portions of the walls and the first demolitions began as far back as 190 G. When the first demolition was to be made the Minister of War, General Luque, objected strenuously, and the Prime Minister had to intervene. Postage stamp collectors had a busy year last year, aa more than 1700 new varieties were issued. Of this total 542 were European.
