BELL-KILGOUR AND BELL-HOOPER CLAIMS

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In reply to the letter of “B, H. S.” in this morning’s Daily Times I would like to state that the rich, lead which the Lady Ranfurly dredge was on and which ran into the Cromwell Flat in the vicinity of the Bell-Kilgoup-Bell-Hooper claims is believed to be at a depth of 40 feet below the present workings of the two claims mentioned. If confirmation of this statement is required, I would suggest that those interested should get in touch with Mr A. Faithful of Cromwell, who worked on the Lady Ranfurly claim foir 17 years, was dredgemaster for a period of three years, and was working for tVie company when the big returns were obtained. Mr Faithful has stated in a report printed in the prospectus of the Bell Ranfurly Electric Dredging Company, which company did not go to allotment, that the normal depth of the river would not be more than 45 feet. How. then, is it possible for either the Rell-Kilgour

or Bell-Hooper companies to be working the Lady Ranfurly lead when they are driving at least 10 feet above river level ? I agree with “B. H. S. - ” that bores should be put down in both claims to prove whether there is a rich lead below the present workings on these claims or It now appears that the Cromwell Flat is more suited for dredging than tunnelling. and the two companies concerned might yet prove their ground to be very payable by amalgamating and putting on a dredge that would dredge to the required depth.—l am, etc., Dbedge. February 21.
