MAYOR OF DUNEDIN
HIS PASTORAL DUTIES FREED FOR ONE YEAR A subject of considerable interest was dealt with at the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand yesterday, when it was decided that the Mayor of Dunedin (the Rev. E. T. Cox) should be left without pastoral charge for one year. Practically the whole of the discussion was taken in committee. The matter was introduced by the secretary of the conference (the Rey. W., A. Burley), who reported that a resolution was to come before the conference in reference to the Rev. E. Cox. A committee had given careful consideration to this matter and had viewed It from all standpoints. The committee had made the decision that Mr Cox should be left without pastoral charge for one year. The secretary added that the committee had been very sympathetic in its consideration of the matter. A member: What was the voting In committee? The secretary: The voting was one against, three neutral and 24 in favour. The secretary added thAt this was all that Mr Cox had asked for. The request had come from Mr Cox himself. At this stage the conference decided to go into committee. ' , After a short discussion, it was reported in open meeting that, at his own request, Mr Cox had been left without pastoral charge for one year.
