OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS Owing to steady rain yesterday the management of the Otago Croquet Tournament was compelled to suspend play for the day; ' , The heat on - Thursday proved too much fqr some of the competitors, three of whom decided .to default at. a late hour in the evening when the light was beginning to fail. The management had decided to peg the games out, and recommence in the morning, but in the B Grade Championship Singles, with he scores at 19—17 in Mrs Mitchell’s favour, Mrs Palmer felt unequal to further play, and Mrs Mitchell won by default. In the B Grade Handicap Doubles Mrs Richards and Miss Marshall'were leading by seven points from Mrs French and Miss M'lnmaru '.Mrs unfortunately developed iriflammati u V the eye, and her partner wishes to: return to Christchurch to-day, so this pair also decided to give the game by default to Mrs Richards and Mis?. Marshall. Mrs Horn and Mrs Metcalf also finished up their Championship Singles in semi-darkness, the match having taken longer than anticipated. Mrs Horn, who has recently been in hospital, put rip « good fight, but Mrs Metcalf, who won the Junior Cup last year, and; is one of our coming young players, made few mistakes, and, being a wonderful shot, picked up at the end' and won a good game, 26 —24. ; The following are additional results: CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. First Life. First Round. —Mrs Metcalf beat Mrs Horn, 26 —24. Second Life. First Round.—Mrs Corbett beat Mrs Christopher, 26—15; Mrs Anderson beat Mrs Pettigrew, 26 —12. Second Round. —Mrs J. ,T. Wif son heat Mrs Anderson, 26 —12. V 1 A GRADE HANDICAP First Round. —Mrs Gibson beat Miss Brown, 26—20; Mrs M’Greath beat Mrs Torrance, 26—17. The match between Mrs Gerkin and Mrs Young, and that between Mesdames Cameron and Reay, had to be pegged out owing to failing light, and. will be completed this morning. The Combined Doubles has reached the final, Mrs Richards and G. Hart (Timaru) meet Mesdames Gerkin (Gore) and Reay (Invercargill). This match will be staged to : day as time permits.
