YOUNG GIRL’S DEATH
KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR FINDING OF CORONER CAR NEGLIGENTLY DRIVEN (Per United Press Association 1 AUCKLAND, February 22, The unusual circumstances of an accident which led to the death of a 14-year-old girl, Evelyne Hollinshead, of Mangere, were investigated at an inquest held before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. The child was knocked from her cycle on November 23 by a car driven by Mrs Jessie Crunden, of Mangere, and her death occurred on December 10. The cause of death was shock and haemorrhage following an operation to relieve a condition caused by a depressed fracture of the skull resulting from the accident. Constable Riddell, of Onehunga, produced a statement made by the driver of the ear on the night of the accident. In this she said she was travelling on her correct side at about 15 miles an hour. When she was halfway down the road, the left-hand door flew open. Her purse was on the seat next to the door and she “made a grab at it” with one hand and the car swung over to the right. “ It was only a second or two,” the statement continued. “ I saw two girls. One went to the right and the other to the left. I continued to the right as I thought the girl would have been able to pass me.” Mr Butler, who appeared for the parents of the child, said he would like to express the appreciation of the deceased’s relatives for all Mrs Crunden had done after the accident. - .
In returning a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, Mr Hunt said that the injuries had been caused through the deceased being knocked down by a car which he was bound to find was being negligently driven by Mrs Crunden.
