THE COOK ISLANDS
DAMAGE BY HURRICANE FULL INVESTIGATION PROPOSED (Feom Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, February 15. In order to investigate the extent of the hurricane in the Cook Islands, particularly those islands such as Palmerston which have no wireless equipment, it is probable that the Government will despatch the lighthouse steamer Matai to the group within the next tew days. It' is understood that it was originally intended to despatch H-M.S. Leith, but the selection of the Matai is now more probable. The steamer will take food supplies in case there ig a shortage as a result or the hurricane and on© doctor, there being only one in the group. Alarmist rumours circulated regarding the extent of the damage are officially deprecated, and it is explained that the despatch of a steamer is a purely precautionary measure.
