CROMWELL GORGE

A SERIOUS CLOUDBURST SLIPS ON RAILWAY LINE iTOFHG SERVICES INTER- . I :.-■:? RUPTED As the result of a cloudburst in the gorge between Clyde and Cromwell late yesterday afternoon both the road and rail, communication through the gorge have been blocked. It was not possible to gain full'particulars last night, but it is understood that three large slips: and several smaller ones have occurred on a railway line, and that the total length of line affected is approximately one mile. Some of the slips are believed to be fairly deep.

A number of washouts have also blocked the roads, and so far as was known in Dunedin last night neither motor cars nor' the trains will be able to get through to-day, although one company will operate a motor service from Dunedin to \ the first slip, and passengers will be picked up on the other side. A work train left Dunedin last night for the gorge, and until it reaches the spot the full extent of the damage to the railway line will' not be known.
