nfflr NEW SOUTH WALES TITLES APPROACHING FINAL STAGES SYDNEY, November 28. (Received Nov. 28, at 11.5 p.m.) The New South Wales lawn tennis championships were continued in hot, sultry weather. The courts were playing faster than previously. MEN'S SINGLES. The quarter-finals of the Men's Champion Singles resulted as follows: Hopman defeated Menzel 4—6, I—6, 6—2, 6—l, 6—4. Quist defeated Kirby 6—3, 6—o, 6—2. Perry defeated Moon 6—o, 7—5, 6—4. Crawford defeated Thompson 6—2, 6—l, 6—l. WOMEN'S SINGLES. The quarter-finals of the Women's Singles resulted:— Miss Hartigan defeated Mrs Hopman 6—B, 6—l, 6—3. Mrs Westmacott defeated Miss Dearman 12—10, 6—3. Miss Lyle defeated Miss Bickerton' 6—4, B—6. Miss Round defeated Mrs Molesworlh 6—l, 6—2. MIXED DOUBLES. The results of the quarter-finals were as follows: Hopman and Mrs Hopman defeated Maier and Miss Hartigan 6—2, 6—-4. Kirby and Miss Lyle defeated Hughes and Miss Dearman 7 —5, 6—2. Menzel and Miss Bickerton defeated Quist and Miss Valkenburg I—6, 6—4, 10—8. Perry and Miss Round defeated Dunlop and Mrs Westmacott 6—3, 6—l. Hopman played brilliantly in the last three sets to beat Menzel, whose form showed a great improvement. Perry overwhelmed Moon in the first set, and after that played steadily to win comfortably. Crawford's form was most impressive. He was hitting his service with great power and driving well on both wings. Quist followed good length drives to the net, where he volleyed in great style against Kirby. The South African's forehand shots frequently found the net. THE PROFESSIONAL GAME BELGIUM'S DEFINITE STAND LONDON, November 27. The Evening Standard, commenting on the Belgian Federation's cold shouldering of Tilden, says that the ruling bodies refuse to accept the logical result of the policy of playing throughout the year, which would inevitably mean professionalism.
