NORTH OTAGO SHOW

SUCCESSFUL PEOPLES DAY SOME OUTSTANDING CLYDESDALES YESTERDAYS JUDGING RESULTS (From Ouk Special Repoetee.) OAMARU, November 10. Fine weather prevailed for the second day of the North Otagd Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s summer show today, and in consequence the large Show Grounds were comfortably filled. From the standpoint of keen public interest the show was one of the most successful the association has held for several years. An excellent programme had been arranged for Peopled Day, and the large crowd found enough diversion and to spare among the livestock exhibits, at the ringside, and in and around the machinery and implement pavilions and the numerous side-shows, which have reappeared at full strength again this year. The judging of breeding and working draught horses was carried > out in the morning, and one of the chief events of the afternoon was the parade of prizewinning stock, which was impressively staged, and actually gave the impression of a better exhibition than .the society r\n lay claim to this season. An interesting series of competitions and leaping events proved a great attraction, and there was some very fine horsemanship and equestrian performance to excite the admiration of the spectators. HEAVY HORSES There have been many better exhibitions of Clydesdales on the Oamaru Show Grounds, but it is doubtful whether anything has been seen there to surpass the best quality presented to-day. Among the comparatively few stallions was one which compelled admiration, and in the female classes were to be found some types of outstanding breeding mares which would do almost any stud in New Zealand conspicuous credit. The entries were excellent in many classes, the section maintaining to a creditable degree that keen competition which used to be a feature of North Otago shows. There were only two aged stallions, the first prize going to Mr John Young’s (Allanton) Ochtertyre Splendour, a handy type of sire, got by Brunstone Duplicate out of Scotland’s Queen. He is standing the season in the Ardgowan district. Second to him was Mr G. P. Johnston’s (Alma) Sanguine, by Drumry Reformer out of Dunure Brightest Gem, a horse of quality, but scarcely as distinguished •s his breeding. Without exception, the most outstanding sire on the ground was Mr Johnston’s Dunmore Superb, the imported colt by Dunmore Supreme out of Dunmore Daisy, who has only recently been added to the Comely Bank Stud. Dunmore Superb fills the eye admirably. He is several months short of three years old, but has substance and weight beyond his years, exceptional character and breed type, a good middle, and a strikingly fine set of legs. Seen in action, he is most impressive. The unduly. critical might cavil at his colour, but such a defect, if such it may be termed, is not regarded as seriously in New Zealand as in Lanarkshire. Dunmore Superb deserved his championship to-day, and will, no doubt, add many "more to his list in the near future. The reserve champion entire was Mr P. W. Shacklock’s Glen Royal Desire, by the Fsirlie sire, Desire out of Bloom 111, & fine stamp of two-year-old showing great promise. Other prize-winners in the male section were Messrs W. M. Cooper, Brown Bros., W. A. C. Allan, and J. Sansom. There was a lot of promise in both the two-year-old and yearling ..classes, both of which attracted good entries. The champion female was found in Mrs G. J,. Thompson’s brood mare, ■ Crighton Queen, got by Springfield Stamp out of Lady Hallum, who "was adjudged the best of four brood mares, every one of which would hold her own-in-the best of company, The reserve championship was found in the same class, in Messrs Brown Bros’. Adrere Lady, sired ,by Brunstane Duplicate out of Lady Kitchener. The other' two were Clbverdale Rose, by Archaic, also shown by Messrs Brown Bros., but bred by Mr R. Kennedy (Drummond), and Mr P. W; Shacklock’s Willowbank Collette, by Fabrication. No judge would envy anyone, the task of separating these four animals. The best of the three-year-old fillies was Mr J. Reid’s Rose, by Scotland’s Superb, and Mr C. T. M'Callum (Waikouaiti) won the two-year-old class with his Craigadonr filly, Flowering Cherry, a, very nicely made youngster of considerable promise. Messrs Brown Bros, were second and Mr Shacklock third. There ‘ was a good ring of yearling fillies, Mr 6. J. Thompson winning the red ticket with Crichton Choice Queen, sired - ' by Happy Choice, out of the champion mare, a sweet filly with a beautiful set of legs. Messrs Brown Bros. Aorere Rose was second and Mr J. Tisdall’s Roseberry Queen, by, Myrae Footprint, was third. The best yearling or two-year-old on the.ground was Mr M'Callum’s Flowering Cherry. , ' Other., prize-winners were Messrs J. Johnston, 8. M'Gookin, and E. Butt. Messrs Brown Bros, were prominent in the female group classes and showed some very excellent animals. Mr J. Reid had things practically to himself in the working draughts classes, and showed his usual string of high quality geldings. Mr M'Callum was represented by /an outstanding 15cwt gelding. : ' ■ PRIZE LIST The following is the prize list:— HORSES DRAUGHTS ' Judges: Allison,- Milton (males), and Mr D.
