CITY COUNCIL

COMMITTEE REPORTS The following are the reports of the various committees, which will be presented at the fortnightly ineeting of the City Council on Wednesday night:— GENERAL COMMITTEE “LEARN TO SWIM” WEEK. The General Committee will recommend that as in previous years, a grant of £lO be made to the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, as a contribution towards the cost of organising the annual “ Learn to Swim ” campaign at the Tepid Baths. LICENSES AND PERMITS. The committee will report that one trade -sign and 12 milk vendors’ licenses have been granted. One application for permission to erect an advertising hoarding at Forbury corner has been declined, the committee bein" of the opinion that the site is unsuitable from a residential point of view, and that there are sufficient permits for advertising in the locality already in existence. WORKS COMMITTEE KERB AND CHANNEL REQUIRED. The Works Committee will report that a petition has been received from eight residents of Passmore orescent for the provision of a second kerb and channel on the north side of the street for a length of about seven chains' to mark off the portion of the street which they request to be laid out in grass. The matter has been duly considered, and the committee is of opinion that the request would be quite reasonable if sufficient funds were available for the work, as it appears to be the only suitable means of laying out this portion of the street permanently. The difficulty, however, is to find sufficient funds for one kerb and channel in many streets, and the committee is unable to see its way to grant the request. The petitioners have been advised accordingly. ADDITIONAL RELIEF WORK. Pursuant to instructions from the council the committee has considered a request made by the South Dunedin Unemployed Association for the council’s support in 'their appeal to the Unemployment Board for an extra day’s work per man until Christmas, and the committee now reports having communicated with the Unemployment Board accordingly.
