Dr Robert Church writes: “ I send you my solutions to this week’s problems, which are certainly dainty. Almost thou temptest me to become a regular solver. From time to time I may have the opportunity of sending you a solution when I can tear myself away from my several interests.” GAMES. The following game was awarded the brilliancy prize at the German championship tourney at Bad Aachen. The game reminds us of the marvellous games of the days of Anderssen and his school:— (“ Queen’s Gambit Declined.") White. Black.
(a) After White's P to K 3, blocking the Q B, the stonewall defence. . .P to K B 4, is quite satisfactory. (b) Threatening P takes P, to which Black must reply B P takes P, after which he would be left with his K P behindhand. (c) To be free to reply K P takes P if White plays . P takes P. (d) The natural move, and yet White’s play seems to Indicate it faulty. (e) A marvellous piece of intuitive play. (f) The courage of genius. (g) If 12. . .Q to K 2; 13. R to K 1, Castles; 14. Q Kt to Kt 5 wins. If 12. . .Q to Kt 3; 13. Kt to R 4, Q to K 3; 14. R to Kl, etc. If 12. ..Qto K 3; 13. KKt to Kt 5, Q to Kt 3; 14. Kt takes B. ch, Q takes Kt; 15. R to K 1. ch, K to B 1; 16. B to B 4! wins. (h) If 13. . .B to K 2; 14. Kt to Q 6, ch, KtoQ 1; 15. B to Kt 6, etc. (I) Now that the Black K is definitely fixed In the centre the plan is to open up also possible avenues of attack on him. (J) Another unexpected blow, threatening Kt to K 6, ch. If 13. . .P takes Kt; 19. Q to B 6. (k) Another hard hit. Now Kt to B 6 threatens. (l) If 21. . .Q to Q 2; 22. R to K 6 wins. White threatened R to K 4. (m) Threatens both R to K 7 and R to B 7. If 23. . .Q takes P; 24. E to K 8, ch, Kt takes R; 25. B lakhs Q, Kt takes B ; 26. Q takes P, and the win is easy. (n) Q to R 5 offers better prospects. (o) Or 28, . ,R to Q 8, ch ; 29. K to B 2, Pto Q 7; 30. B to Kt 5, R to B 8, ch; 31. K to Kt 3 wins. (p) Immediately fatal. More agony is obtained by 30. . .R to K 7; 31. R to Kt 8, ch, K to Q 2; 32. R to B 7, ch, K to K 3; 33. R to K 7, ch, etc. The following bright game was played In the fourth round of the Christmas tourney at Hastings : . ("Queen’s Gambit Declined.”)
(a) The usual play Is Kt to K B 3, but White has a different future in mind for his Kt. (b) Miss Menchik played the same defence against Flohr at Hastings in 1933, but with no better success. Perhaps P to B 3 might be preferable. (c) A bad mistake; B to Kt 2 was necessary. (d) For if 20. . .K takes B ; 21. Q to Kt, ch. K to B 1; 22. R to R 8, mate.
