Australian Commerce “ Shipping and Commerce of Australia, 1934,” is the title of a publication of 150 pages, which forms a special issue of the Daily Commercial News and Shipping List, a journal well known and valued by Australian business men. This annual provides an excellent review of most phases of primary industrial and (commercial and shipping activity in the Commonwealth during the past year. The articles are written by persons intimately associated with the industries and business which they consider—the pastoral industry, Australian timbers, banking and finance, insurance, the frozen meat export trade, and so on—and may be taken, as an authoritative representation of the point of view of the commercial community. The illustrations are numerous. The New Nation A review of the international outlook for Australian primary products, particularly wool, by Professor A. H. Charteris, takes pride of place in the October number of the New Nation Magazine, which is now published as a monthly. Professor Charteris discusses the serious situation created by the self-sufficient economic policy of Germany, by which wool purchases are being severely, restricted; his conclusion is that German economy is moving increasingly in this direction. The contains an interesting variety of stories and feature pages calculated to attract the attention of all members of the farming communities, and is excellently illustrated. Miscellaneous “Anzac” (2s) is a nicely-produced collection of verses by A. H. Wilkie, of Takapuna, who wrote the official account of the war history of the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment. The author has seen considerable service hoth in the Boer and Great Wars, and his experience with the Main-Body of the N.Z.E.F. at the Gallipoli landing and thereafter has equipped him to describe the tragic but gallant adventure with knowledge. The November issue of the Australian Composer and Writer’s Monthly compensates for poor format by the interest of some of its articles from the point of view of free-lances in this part of the world. The issue 'incorporates the New Zealand Writer and Dramatist, edited by J. R. Hastings (19 Howe street, Wellington).

Western Australia-^, The Christmas number of the Western Mail this year shows a striking advance on any previous annual issued from Perth, and takes its place among the best of the yearly Australian and New Zealand publications. Numerous photographs and news articles provide the reader with a comprehensive view of the resources and beauties of Western Australia, and there are, in addition, several plates in full colour, finely reproduced from the works of Australian artists, which add to the merit of the annual.
