Monastic is showing improvement m Ms schooling over hurdles. -•:.;':■ The field remaining in the New Zealand Derby cannot be considered a strong lot,:' .'■" . ;,.-.';•' '; ."' Ranelagh will be reserved for ■■ Ran; giora in preference. to racing at Trentbam. • . •'■:..,;

W. Jones will be riding Totolomai, Slaemish, and Knocklong at the Gore meeting.

Shatter is -on the sale'market in Melbourne. He is both a good and bad horse, and hence not.a punter's pal.

.New Zealand Cup candidates in Ihe Smuggler,: Steeton, Tauiraraai, and Sungem will be seen out at the Gore meeting., ..; .:v.'. :.',.._,'; ~ ,, ~'..

Apparently The Masquerader had _a worse trip than first, reported as it _is now stated that he may be put of training for some'time. • iMinerval has been replaced in training arid if'he goes on,the right way he will be allowed to take" his chance in long distance races later in the season.

Sam Smith has: been galloping well and frill'' bo fancied at Rangiora. Fair Weather. is another that has been gal-. loping- well. '■_■ . ; Cricket Bat should be improved.by,his •racing at Treritham as he is a big lusty conditioned horse that requires. a good deal of tuning up to reach racing form. Spiral,- .the winner of the. principal event at Wellington, was got by Liinond from Dr.ax by Spearmint—Suncroft by Sunstar—-Miramonde by Desmond from Admiration.

' None of the two-year-olds at Wingatui developed. sufficiently to remain in the Welcome Stakes. Some of Mr G. J. Barton's youngsters may go up for the handicap events.-. While riding Canopy in her race' on the second day of the Auckland meeting, L. J. Ellis had his left eye injured through being struck .by a lump of: earth which was thrown up by a'horse in frontof him.

Knockfin put up a good gallop last week by covering six furlongs in lmin.l3 3-ssec. _She ran'the; first three .furlongs in 35 3-ssec. and apparently her. form m the heavy going at Timaru has. to be put into the discard.

Those that have dropped out of .the original field engaged in the New Zealand Cup include Jonathan, Peter Jackson, King's Knave, -Minerval, Inflation, Ventrac, and : several • others of the rank and file brigade with a remote chance on paper. I"

\ Hope springs eternal in the trainer's breast, or at least the owners' who force the position on to a trainer. In looki ing through, the Jists of horses in train- | ing one cannot fail to be'struck with the courage, to put it mildlj',..displayed with some flattered; as racehorses. The absentees from the! Stewards' Hanw dicap. after the declaration of acceptances include Silver Ring,-Red: Manfred> Diafo-i mous, The M as iuerader, Passion Fruit, Beau j Gallant, Fracas, Burnish, Corinilla, Pladje, and ' Royal Sceptre. Red Manfred figures in the New Zealand Cup. 'Royal Hunting, who. was taken ■ over "to! Sydney for Mr 0. Nelson by C. "■ Boyle,' arid had the misfortune to; injure himself: by falling on the bitumen, has. made a good recovery, and, in a race at Moonee Valley on Wednesday, he finished fourth. It is expected that he will be ready to show his best shortly. Bojrle has had a very disappointing experience with Saltspray in his races in Australia. New Zealanders who saw the spring racing in .Sydney state that Custodian looked the ihakings of a good-class, three-year-old When he first started racing over there, but he went too sore to be persevered with. There was an interval of soundness, but> in an-attempt, to hurry him along he again went sore. An endeavour' will be made- to get him' fit enough for the Derby at Riccarton.:

When the horses of Mr C. T. Keeble were offered' at auction in Sydney this month,'Lack, at 93 guineas, was the only one to change hands. ' 'When Golden Wings entered the ring it was announced by the auctioneer that no. opening bid of less' than 500gns would be' considered, but as no one set.the ball rolling v at > the amount he was passed out! Lack was booked to the'Randwick trainer G. P. Nailon, but an offer of 275gns was.refused for Red RufUs.

R. Reed and his wife suffered a sud*i den bereavement last week in the death of Mr Scott, father of Mrs Reed, and mine host of the Royal Hotel at Randwick, in which capacity he was well known to New Zealanders visitirig Sydney. Mr : Scott died suddenly in his chair after listening to a broadcast of a race, and he was buried last Thursday. Reed will be': going to Melbourne for the .Cup carnival, and he has been engaged, to.ride Golden Hair and Golden Promise.

■Wingatui' has one New Zealand Cup candidate in Sungem. She has, so far not accomplished anything to fancy her chance, but may stay on well under a light weight. She ..is in at Gore, and may show something, there to bring, her into favour. One objection to Sungem is the fact that her sire, Paper Money, although great for getting speed, has ,noi been a success in siring stayers. Her dam, Sunbird, may help, as she was got by Martian, and is a, sister to a Cup winner in /Ardenvlior.

In discussing the return home of some of the New, Zealand horses, the Sydney writer, "Pilot," said that neither Custodian nor Abdication was every really right during his stay, though Abdication ran well. enough in hie division of the Canonbury Stakes to suggest that after his return home he may soon enter the winning list. No fault could be found with. The Maequerader's condition while here, but he simply was not good enough at the weights. However, it would: not surprise me if, at the. New Zealand Cup meeting, he did something towards refunding the cost of his trip to Australia.

The Smuggler may be classed as the only proved stayer ; engaged in the New Zealand'Crip. Last year he ran third, beaten by Palantua 7.2 and Rocket 7.2 when carrying 7.8. • The Smuggler was two lengths- and a-half- away in 3min 22 l-ssec. This year he has an extra 61b, and on form' oyer the. distance must be .granted a chance. Later in the season The Smuggler.won the Great. Autumn Handicap with'B.o by a head from Cough 7.'0, with Ranelagh 7.10 another length away. Ar.gentic 8;7 and. Great Star 7.9 were -amongst-the unplaced, lot. In this year's race The Smuggler meets Cough on 61b, Ranelagh on 141 b, and Argentic on 151 b, and Great Star on 141 b worse terms. Of the above lot Argentic may supplythe most trouble to the Southland gelding. '.- '-.-, ..

.Dunediii-ow'ned horses in Mobile, Geld Paper, Cherry Queen, and Tizzy figure in* the Stewards' Handicap, and the best, of-.'them at present is Mobile, who caii go very fast .under a light weight. He ■won at the Grand National meeting with 8.9 in lmin 1& l-ssee, and beat Copyist who Tras : gjving 71b. On the last day of the meeting Mobile appeared to be unlucky in not ; finishing closer, to C'ranford- when giving him 121 b over seven

furlongs. Tizzy and Cherry Queen are very speedy, but can only be granted an outside chance. Gold Paper has speed, but apt to be a bit flighty.

The Mght Raid cold Lobengula is booked to.- leave in December for Melbourne, and will join J. Holt's stable. The colt has done exceptionally well since being handed. He is a nice mover, with fine, easy swinging action and a beautifuly mannered colt. The colt cannot fail to please them in Australia, and, if there is anything in breeding, conformation, and a perfect temperament, he should. make a high-class racehourse. His dam, Zany, was, got by Absurd— Zeta, ,'by Ayre. Laddie—Leading Lady, by, Grafton—Drama, by Trenton. This year Zany has a colt to Iliad, whose stock' show great promise, but, nevevthedess, she! returned to Nnght Raid again this year.

Silver Streak won the Stewards' Handicapa with 141 b less than he will carry this year. He meets Cranford, who was second on 111 b worse terms for a halflength beating. Silver Streak afterwards won the Railway Handicap with 7-1 Q and dead-heated with Golden-Wings 10.0 when carrying 8.5. Later in the season Silver Streak won at Oamaru. with 9.2 in lniin 12 l-ssecfront Gold Paper, and at Riccarton meets the latter on 61b better terms. Mobile was amongst the unplaced, and Silver Streak meets him on 14 better terms. So much for the light scale of weights on which the handicap is framed. In the face of these figures, a; northern critic lias ventured the opinion that "the framing of a flattering handicap, the winner of which will be hard to pick, but' which should not' be a difficult race to win." The handicap means that when a horse such, as Silver Streak has, won in fast time amongst good company with' a fairly high weight up' most of the others could not',win with nothing on their back. The handicap may not,, how-i ever, decide the result but rather the condition of a horse on the day. ;
