SEARCH FOR TREASURE

COCOS ISLANDS EXPEDITION THE MEMBERS ARRESTED NEW YORK, October 20. (Received Oct. 21, at 10 p.m.) The San Jose (Costa Rica) correspondent of the New York Times states that Cocoa Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, off Central America, were invaded by Costa Rican troops, who arrested 18 Britons, members of the treasure hunting expedition sponsored by the " Recovery Company, Limited," of London. Por years various expeditions have hunted for supposedly fabulous pirate treasure buried on the island but, as far as can be recalled, with no success. According to official word received here the Government objects to the prospectus of the Recovery Company, which challenges Costa Rica's sovereignty on the island. Those arrested include Mrs and Mr S. D. A. Jolly, Captain C. O. Polkinghorne and Commander F. C. Finnis. Much valuable equipment, including a radio station, electric plant, a refrigerator and firearms, was confiscated and packed for shipment to Costa Rica. The company's prospectus is reported to have declared that Costa Rica's claims to the island are at variance with the boundary arbitration decisions, and insists that the finders of the treasure should have no difficulty in substantiating their right to the property. However, the writers of geography have obviously been faulty, as one of the islands mentioned belongs to the Republic of Panama. It is understood that the expedition was hunting for treasure which they believe to be in excess of 60,000,000 dollars.
