OBITUARY

MR H. E. WILSON The death occurred en Friday at his residence, Hawthorne avenue, Mornington, of Mr Herbert Edward Wilson, a well-known and respected citizen of Dunediri. He had enjoyed moderate health since his retirement from business some years ago, and his death, following a visit to. the city that afternoon, was quite unexpected. .'Mr Wilson was born 72 years ago at Pomahaka, and on coming to Dunedin joined the firm of Messrs Rose, Wilson and Co. He was later with Messrs Ross and Glendining, and remained with this company for 10 years, accepting in 1900 a partnership with Messrs William Brown and Co., auditors, which firm he represented on the Dunedin Stock Exchange for many years. During his lengthy commercial

career, Mr Wilson gained the esteem of the business community and made a wide circle of friends. He was a member of many directorates, including that of Messrs Charles • Begg and Co., and retained several important personal trusts, besides being a trustee of the York Place Hall. Reference to his death was made at Saturday morning's callover of the Dunedin Stock Exchange, when a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried, the members standing in silence. Mr Wilson was prominently associated with various forms of sport. He was one of the first persons to play lacrosse in Otago, and represented the province in a match at Invercargill. He was a keen golfer, being a member of the' Otago Club, a fine croquet player, and in later years was well known as a bowler. He was a member of the Mornington Club and an honorary member of the Kaituna Club. The work of the Mornington Presbyterian Church claimed a good deal of his attention, and he was for 22 years a teacher in the Sunday school, as well as being interested in the activities of the choir. Mr Wilson is survived by his wife; a sister, Mrs A. A. Scott, of Timaru, and a brother, Mr G. S. Wilson, of Glenomaru. The funeral took place yesterday at the Southern Cemetery. MR C. N. He joined the service of the bank at Napier in 1882 and was later stationed at several. branches. He was manager first at Feilding and then at Timaru. and Napier. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) BERLIN, October 19. The death : is announced of Fieldmarshal von Kluck, commander of the German First Army in 1914. Alexander von Kluck was boru at Munster on May 20, 1846. He entered the Prussian army in 1865. He served in the Austro-Prussian (1866) and wounded twice at Metz. In 1906 was promoted general of infantry, and in 1913 he was inspector-general of the eighth inspection, including the 2nd, sth, and 6th army corps, with Headquarters at Berlin. When the Great War broke out he was placed in command of the German first army, which invaded and overran Belgium early in August, 1914, and thereupon advanced west. After receiving the surrender of Brussels and masking Antwerp, he moved south on Mons. Von Kluck drove the British thence, took Tournai, and captured Maubeuge, the Allies falling back towards Paris, and resting on the Marne and the Seine." Early in September, Kluck, whose line of advance from Mons had been south-west to the outworks of Paris, turned south-east and exposed his flank, which was attacked by the French and the British, and brought about, his defeat in the Battle of the Marne, accompanied by the general retreat of the German armies. Von Kluck stood on the Aisne, and early in 1915 was fighting at Soissons with success, but failed to take Soissons itself, and retired in 1916.
