ALEXANDRA Weather conditions have been unsettled all the week. Yesterday snow fell on the mountains and fears were entertained of another frost. Reports of the heavy winds of last week-end are still coming to hand and old residents of Central Otago consider the gale to be the fiercest they have ever experienced. In the Ida Valley the gale raged throughout Friday and caused considerable damage. Mr L. Tilbury, of Moa Creek, is a heavy loser. The Moa Creek Hall, of which he is the owner, was destroyed, the floor alone remaining. A billiard table on the premises was also destroyed, A slaughterhouse and other outbuildings were also blown down. A family which was living in tents had their dwellings blown away, and, following on this, their other belongings caught fire. Many trees were torn up, and at Alexandra the roof of Mr Adcock s house was removed and about 200 panes of glass in his extensive glasshouse broken. The Alexandra Golf Club will close for the season on Labour Day. In the semi-finals of the knock-out competition for the M’Grath Button, Mrs G. Frye beat Miss Cameron, 4 up and 3 to play, and Mrs M’Grath beat Miss N. O’Kane by default. In connection with the borough water scheme the Borough Council has requested the Health Department to supply a complete report on the water, and the council will not undertake the poll until the report has been made known to the ratepayers. Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P.,_ * s also arranging the necessary validating legislation to enable the scheme to proceed without delay. • A general meeting of the Alexandra Caledonian Society was held last Friday evening, Mr H. Hesson (president) was in the chair. The New Zealand Council of the Piping and Dancing Association wrote awarding the South Island march playing championship and championship of’Otago for Highland fling, 16 years or under, to the Alexandra Society for the New Year’s Day sports. —The offer was received with thanks. A. Mac Kay presented to the society foi competition a shield valued •at 25gus, and he was appointed a life member of the society for his generosity. Mr D. M'Kechnie and A. M’Kay wrote accenting positions as judges of the piping and dancing events. Mr C. B. Mitchell was appointed senior secretary of the society. ROXBURGH It is expected that the new reservoir will be completed, and ready for filling in about three weeks time. The extending of the water supply in certain parts of the borough will then receive attention. These additions to the town supply will make it one of the best supplies in the Dominion, The monthly meeting of the Teviot Power Board was held on Wednesday, Dr Gilmour presiding. Messrs Waigth, George, Macdonald, Riach, Kinaston, and Michelle were present. Accounts amounting to £290 11s 2d were passed for payment. «Revenue for the month was £l4l 7s Id. The foreman reported that the plant was in good order. Several matters in connection with loan conversion were discussed, and the printing of new debentures was deferred pending further information. It was decided that matters for immediate attention be left in the hands of the chairman and secretary and Mr Waigth. The conversion is proceeding quite satisfactorily, and the secretary has been granted an assistant until the work is completed. PALMERSTON Members of the Otago Hospital Board paid one of their periodical visits of inspection to the Palmerston Hospital on Thursday afternoon, and were met by Mr and Mrs W. B. Galloway and Mr W. C. Arkle, of the local committee. The visitors expressed delight with the condition of both the hospital and grounds. The party also visited the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, where everything was satisfactory. The, members of the party were:—Messrs A. Steel, J. W. Dove, A. F. Quelch, D. M’Lennan, H. S. Sheat, Downes, Dr Newlands, Miss Farquhar, Dr Thomson (superintendent). Miss Tennant (matron), and Messrs P. Y. Wales (architect) and J. Jacobs (secretary). The president (Mrs J. W. Sutherland) presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston Saravati Club. A bring and buy sale was held in conjunction with the evening, and was a financial success. The. programme was as follows:—Vocal solo. Miss Edna Brown; recitation, Miss N. Moodie; pianoforte solo, Miss M. Ross; vocal solo, Mrs W. R. Wedge; recitation, Miss M. S. Capstick; vocal solo, Miss M’Grath (Oamaru) ; vocal duet. Mrs J. W. Sutherland and Miss K. Brown; items, the Glee; vocal solo, Mrs W. R. Wedge; pianoforte solo, Miss N. Pickett; recitation, Miss M. Twaddle; vocal solo, Mrs G. Burrow. A competition presented by Mrs Boss was won by Mrs A. Twaddle, with Miss M’Ritchie runner-up. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames J. A. Jnll, H. Whutleston, W. R. Wedge and Miss E. Sheat.
