Smallpeice, at Guildford, Surrey, recently, drew attention to the fact that he was tho fourteenth member of his family to be mayor of the borough. The first, Thoma* Smalpis, was mayor in 1502. during tue reign of Henry VII. By 1552 the name had been altered and no fewer than seven members of the family occupied the mayoral chair during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. A John Smallpeece held office in the time of Queen Anne and a namesake in that of William IV. It was not till 1905, 69 years later, that the late F. F. Smallpeice was elected to office. The record is likely to stand. Altogether the Smallpeices have served Guildford for over 400 years.
