PALMERSTON - The Palmersion, Waikouaiti,. and Waihemo Scottish Society held an enjoyable ladies' night on Thursday. Songs were sung by Mr A. Innes,' and 'several of the old dances were indulged in, including Rory O'More, the Eight-some, reel, the Highland schottische, polka, fascinating polka, and mazurka. The proceedings were opened by the pipe-major of the society £Mr D - H. Ross) with a-bagpipe selection, and music for the dancing was contributed, by Miss H. Philip. . During the evening the chief (Mr E. J. Kelly), after Welcoming the visitors, thanked Mrg J. Adams and Messrs J. Adams, R. Adama and C. C. Appleby, who had given their services to the society ever since they had become members of it. He then presented Mrs Adams with a beautiful handbag, Mr J. Adams with an electric reading lamp, Mr R. Adams with a pair of leather travelling slippers, and Mr C. C. Appleby with a handsome fire-screen. Mr J. Adams responded on behalf of himself and Mrs Adams, and Mr R. Adama for himself and Mr Appleby. ALEXANDRA The annual meeting of the Alexandra Lawn Tennis Club was held on Monday evening, the president (Mr R. E. M'Lav) presiding over a good attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing-year resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. H. Hart; vice-presidents—Mrs J. D. Watt, Mr J. R. Earwaker, and R. E.M'Lay; secretary and treasurer, Miss I. Wallace; auditor, Mr R. Hewitt: committee—Mrs E. Russell and Misses R. Miller, N. Ferris, S. Cameron, and J. Scott, and Messrs R. Hewitt and J. Duncan; selector, Mr R. E. M'Lay; delegates to Vincent Subassociation, Messrs J. H. Hart and R. Hewitt; delegates to Reserves Committee, Messrs R. E. M'Lay. and J. R. Earwaker. Before top-dressing the courts, it was derided to obtain advice on the matter. Opening day was fixed for October 13. It was also decided to enter one A Grade team for the competitions. The question of holding a tournament during the Christinas and New Year holidays was discussed, but the matter was held over in the meantime. • ' . Orchardists are having an anxious time at present because, until the end of the present month at least, the danger of a frost is ever present.. Last evening nine degrees were registered on the grass at the local station, but, as usual, the frost was patchy, and in some belts no frost at all was recorded.. A greater number of orchardists than "ever have this year installed ;frost-fighting appliances, which should reduce the damage should a frost of last year's severity be experienced. Weather conditions are excellent for lambing, which is general throughout the district. The mortality rate is not considered to be as heavy as in previous years. Messrs M. C. Hammon and. E. Pearce, Government auditors, are at present carrying out the periodical audit of local bodies and Government departments in this town. ~...:
