PROSPECTS FOR TIMARU

(From Our Special Reporter.) •TIMARU, October 12. The weather promises to be favourable for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting, for which an excellent card should prove a great draw. In fact, a club could not wish to attract a better field than that in the Teschemaker Handicap, in which the majority of the field claim engagements in the New Zealand Cup. There are also excellent fields engaged in the Flying Handicap and the balance of the events on the card. Polydora, the top weight in the Teschemaker Handicap, has not appeared in public since winning at the Dunedin spring meeting of last season, and she has been kept well up in the handicap, but will have the benefit of an allowance. Good track work will help her chance. Polydora ran at the Grand National rneetiug, when she'did not behave too well at the barrier. Argentic ran a good race at Ashburton, and Sweet Agnes showed excellent form at the Grand National meeting. Ranelagh showed improving form .at.GeraJdine, where Some Shamble scored in the Cup. The scale of weights is a bit too light to assist those at the bottom of the handicap, and the two that look most dangerous there are Silver Sight and Tout le Monde. Some smart sprinters are engaged in the Flying Handicap and 6ome good racing should be provided by the various events, which read fairly open. The following may be amongst those fancied during the day:— Otaio Hurdles—Coll. Gold Knight, Lycidas. Spring Stakes.—Secret Paper, Coat of Arms, First View, or Trumpet Blast, and in the absence of any of the above Tuirau may come iuto favour. Teschemaker Handicap.—Polydora, Argentic, Sweet Agnes, or Silver Sight. Tycho Hack Handicap.—Top Rank, Rebel Chief, Elbanor, or Unseen. Kerrytown Hack Handicap.—Colossian, Hunting Go, Weatherly. Flying Handicap.—Cranford, Knockfin, Silver Streak, or Rebel Star. The betting will be on the 75-25 division of the investments.
